Thursday NFL analysis: The 6-1 NFC South leading New Orleans Saints head to East Rutherford, New Jersey to take on the 4-4 New York Jets.

It’s pretty obvious that head coach Sean Payton was missed last year.  It’s business as usual in New Orleans, which means Rex Ryan Jets & Rob Ryan Saintsscoreboards are lighting up. Drew Brees is having another spectacular season, passing for 2290 yards with 19 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 109.2. His main target, tight end Jimmy Graham is benefiting, with 630 yards and 8 touchdowns. Brees also has a new target this season, rookie Kenny Stills out of Oklahoma. Stills has been slowly integrated into the passing game and has been a difference maker in his past two games. The defense is improved this year as well. The Saints hired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in the off season, and the newly employed 3-4 defense has paid dividends. The defense ranks seventh in the league in team defense and rank fifth in the league in takeaways.  The latest Superbowl odds have

The New York Jets have been a pleasant surprise this year. The team was picked to finish near the bottom of the AFC by a lot of experts, but is currently 4-4 and tied for second in the AFC East. The team is reminiscent of the 2009 squad that went all the way to the AFC championship. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith has had his ups and downs, but has performed well for the most part. He’s proving a lot of the naysayers wrong and showing he was worthy of a high draft selection. The Jets run the ball effectively as well, averaging 120 yards a game on the ground. The defense has been stout, as they rank thirteenth in the league in total defense and while allowing 237 yards per game against the pass.

This is quite the interesting matchup. If there is anyone that knows how to exploit Rob Ryan’s defense, it’s his brother Rex. The Saints defense is susceptible to the run, and I do expect the Jets to do just that. You might see Rex Ryan steal a page out of New England’s game plan against the Saints. When the Saints visited Foxboro, the Patriots matched up Jimmy Graham with their best and biggest cornerback, Aqib Talib. The end result was Graham being held without a catch for the first time this season. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the 6’2” Antonio Cromartie matched up with Graham, while throwing blitz packages at Brees. The Jets embrace the underdog role, especially at home. As a home underdog this year, they are 3-0.

When teams get blown out by 30 points or more, they respond well with a maximum effort the following week. This will only be the third road game this year for the Saints. They are 2-0 away from the Superdome, but at Tampa Bay they escaped with a narrow two point win. In Chicago, they won but were outgained by almost 100 yards. With a primetime matchup at Dallas next week and a motivated Jets team, this might be a bad spot for New Orleans. I expect The Jets to be more physical and come out victorious on Sunday, as they can’t afford to possibly fall three games behind in their division.
