Week 5 NFL Free Picks: Texans @ 49ers 10/6/13

Andre Johnson TexansSunday Night Football Pick: Houston Texans vs. San Francisco 49ers 10/6: Our Sunday Night Football picks head to “The Stick” for Week 6, as the Houston Texans try to redeem themselves from last week’s blunder by taking out the San Francisco 49ers. Tensions are sure to be high in this battle of 2-2 teams, and we think that we have the answers for what should be a great game to make our pro football picks on.

The Texans are only lined at +8, a sure sign that the oddsmakers aren’t real believers quite yet. This is the first time that Houston has been a dog in a game of more than a point all season long, and we think that these points might make all the difference in the world between a cover and a sixth straight ATS loss.

The one thing that we really haven’t seen this year out of the 49ers is a close game. They’ve played three blowouts and one 34-28 game in the first week of the season that really felt like a lot more of a mismatch. We know if both of these teams play at their best that San Francisco is going to win and probably cover, but we are doubting whether the Niners really have their best in them. Against a very similar offense last week, the Texans held Seattle down to just 270 yards in almost five full quarters of football. If not for a stupid pick six on a ball that never should have been thrown, the Seahawks would have been held under 250 yards and with just 13 points.

The truth of the matter is that Houston has the bigger stars on defense now that LB Aldon Smith is gone, DT Ian Williams is out for the season, and both LB Patrick Williams and DB Nnamdi Asomugha are struggling with a groin and an ankle problem respectively. The other truth of the matter is that Houston has a comparable offensive line, a better running back, better tight ends, and a better main receiving option. The problem? QB Matt Schaub won’t stop turning the ball over in crucial spots. The bad news for the Texans is that Schaub is probably the reason that this game is going to be lost. He’ll probably make a bad decision at the end of the game that will cost the team a shot at victory. The good news? Schaub is probably going to have some good numbers outside of the blunder, and at least he’ll lead the team to a cover… not that that is any consolation.
