Sunday NFL analysis:  The San Francisco 49ers will try to rebound of loss last week as the will head to New Orleans to take on the 7-2 Saints.Colin Kaepernick 49ers vs Saints

Last week saw the 49ers’ five game win streak snapped as they lost a low scoring physical battle against the Carolina Panthers. The main concern was the performance of Colin Kaepernick, who struggled mightily as he was 11 for 22 for 91 yards, 1 interception and was sacked six times. The Niners also struggled to convert on third down (2-11) as they failed establish any kind of offensive rhythm. It didn’t help matters that tight end Vernon Davis left early in the second quarter, and it was Mario Manningham’s first game back from an injury the previous season. The defense has been playing well, even in the loss to the Panthers. On the season, San Francisco ranks fourth in the league in total defense, giving up 211.1 yards through the air per game and 105.1 yards per game on the ground. The defense got Aldon Smith back last week, but was limited in action. It is believed he will play a much more significant role this week.

New Orleans created quite the buzz last week, as they dominated the Dallas Cowboys in a 49-17 win. The biggest takeaway from the win was the offensive continuity as they set an NFL record with 40 first downs. The running game was a big story as well, as they gained 242 on the ground. After Dallas had suffered two key injuries on defense, the Saints continuously gashed the Dallas defense with 15 rushing first downs. It was by far the most balanced offensive effort from the Saints this year. The Saints are the second ranked passing team in the NFL, averaging 324.9 yards per contest.

New Orleans’ dominance at home is well documented, as they have outscored their opponents 176-75 in their five home games. San Francisco has had New Orleans’ number as of late, winning the last two contests between the two. This matchup is an intriguing one to say the least, as you have two of the more brilliant minds in football, Jim Harbaugh and Sean Peyton going at it. Then you have the explosive Saints offense against the stout San Francisco defense. In the NFL, it’s all about matchups, and San Francisco matches up very well against New Orleans. The Saints at home are tough to beat, however they do not match up well against physical defenses. The Saints also have trouble stopping the run, which I do believe San Francisco will do a lot of. When the Saints have the ball, I expect San Francisco to be very physical, and throw a lot of blitz packages at Drew Brees. This by far is the best defense the Saints have faced this year. The last comparable defense they faced was against the New York Jets, and Drew Brees was very frustrated in that one as the pass protection was inconsistent.

I see a Saints team that’s riding high after a win, and a 49er team that’s stewing about the loss they suffered last week. In his time in San Francisco, Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers are 8-1 following a loss and 2-0 against the Saints. After this game, I think that record will go to 9-1 and 3-0.
