Sunday Week 9 Free NFL Football Picks – Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers – 11/3

2013 Week 9 Sunday NFL Football Picks
Alanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers
Date: 11/3/2013 – Time: 1:00 p.m. EST – Network: FOX
Falcons @ Panthers Odds: Carolina -6 (O/U: 45) @ JustBet

Falcons vs PanthersWho would have thought that the Carolina Panthers would ever be laying a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons this season, short of a Matt Ryan Injury?  Well Ryan is halthy and the Falcons look old, limited, and bogged down.  Cam Newton is also healthy, and his Panthers are rolling on both sides of the ball, winning three in a row and scoring over 30 points in all those three games.  They’re above .500 for the first time since 2008 and they really appear to be one of the more well-balanced teams in the NFL, making them very difficult to prepare for.  Cam Newton is completing over 75% of his passes and leading the league in passer rating on this Panther win streak.  He has limited his turnovers and is playing the type of smart football that builds careers.  The only knock against their current win-streak is that they have done it against teams with a combined 4-12 record.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons are on the total opposite end of the  emotional rollercoaster that is NFL.  They’ve lost three of their last four and are the most injured team in the league, at key positions (which might be a result of signing old free agents in the off-season rather then using the draft to fill holes.  However, the biggest injury that this team is yearning from is one of their youngest and brightest talents in Julio Jones.  This will be their second  straight game without All Pro receiver Julio Jones who is out for the season, but the return of Roddy White might help give the Atlanta offense and Matt Ryan some much needed options.  Their biggest problem offensively has been their inability to run the ball effectivly, averaging just 62 yards per game.  This is not good when facing a Carolina rush defense that allows less than 80 yards per game on the ground.  Defensively, the Falcons haven’t given up fewer than 23 points in any game this season and they six forced turnovers is the lowest number in all the NFC.  The Falcons have also struggled against opposing tight ends this season.  Their line backing groups hasn’t been great in coverage, nor do they  match up well against a big tight ends like Greg Olsen, who is already one of Cam Newton’s favorite targets.   Atlanta has been struggling against the run as well, which does not match up well against the Panthers spread attack.  The Atlanta Falcons aren’t as bad as their record, and they have a few easier games on the horizon.  However, Carolina is better than their record and this is a bad match up for Atlanta on the road.  They are just missing too many key pieces.

What to expect in this NFL Football match up: Atlanta will likely be one-dimensional from start to finish (as they have been a lot this year) in this game.  With a less than healthy Stephen Jackson, Atlanta will struggles to get anything going on the ground, forcing Matt Ryan to throw the ball early and often.  Expect him to throw 50+ passes in this one.  Carolina’s spread out option offense will cause problems against a below average front seven.  Long scoring drives and more of Newton working the check-downs will likely keep Atlanta off the field.  It’s hard enough to win on the road inside the division, but even harder without help from the running game.  It just seems unlikely the Falcons are going to be able to establish the run in this one, which will make Cam Newton and company too difficult of a task.
