NFC Wildcard Matchup 49ers vs Packers Picks & Analysis: The San Francisco 49ers travel to Lambeau Field to take on the NFC North champion Green Bay Packers in a rematch of last year’s NFC divisional playoff.

Aaron Rodgers made his return last week from a collarbone injury that kept him sidelined for previous 7 games. The return was a positive one as they defeated Chicago 33-28 to win the NFC North division title. Rodgers connected with Randall Cobb on a 48 yard touchdown pass with 38 seconds remaining to give Green Bay the win. If there’s any example of resiliency, the Packers (8-7-1) would be a good example as they’ve won three of their last four games to get into the playoffs. One game that might define their season was in week 15 at Dallas, rallying from 23 points down to defeat the Cowboys in their own building 37-36. Rookie running back Eddie Lacy has been outstanding, with 1178 yards this season. James Starks is also a reason in the backfield, with 493 yards and averaging 5.5 yards per carry. The wide receiver position is back at full strength with the return of Randall Cobb last week. Cobb made his presence felt with 55 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jordy Nelson is leading the way 1314 yards this season. Defensively, the Packers rank 25th in the league, allowing 372.2 yards per game, and allow 247.25 yards passing per game. Their run defense is suspect as well, as they allow 125 yards per game on the ground.

San Francisco (12-4) ended the season on a six game win streak. They finished off their season with a 23-20 victory at Arizona. The offense is rounding into shape, and they are dangerous with a strong running game and a healthy group of receivers. The offense is led by dual threat quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has passed for 3197 yards and rushed for 524. The late season return of Michael Crabtree (284 yards), along with the presence of Anquan Boldin (1179 yds 7TD) and Vernon Davis (850 yds 13 TD) have made the 49ers quite the formidable group. Frank Gore leads a potent rushing attack that is 3rd in the league averaging 137.5 yards per game. The defense for the 49ers is one of the best in the league. The 49ers are ranked 5th in the league in total defense, allowing only 222 yards passing and 94.8 yards rushing per game.Would someone in Green Bay please be a friend to these (not so bright) ladies & advise them to not attempt this for Sunday’s 49ers/Packers Wildcard game; as according to the news the temperature for the game will likely get down to as low as -3° Fahrenheit (-15° to -20° Wind Chill); That is unless these girls either; (A) have a death wish, (b) enjoy massive frost bite, or (c) they are just seeking out pneumonia to test out their new Obamacare plan in 2014. Stay warm Packer fans.

The forecast for Sunday in Green Bay is an abysmal one. It is believed an Arctic blast may reach the city before the 3:40 p.m. local time kickoff, the temperature will rival that of the December 31st, 1967 NFL Championship game between the Packers and the Dallas Cowboys, which is known as the ‘Ice Bowl’. The temperature will most likely be -13 degrees, with a wind-chill of -50. These conditions can’t favor the home team, as it will be Aaron Rodgers’ second game back from injury. One would have to question his effectiveness once he gets hit. More oddly enough, the team that’s actually built for this kind of weather is the team from the West coast, the 49ers. San Francisco has a stout defense and a potent running game, and they have the advantage in the trenches, where the game is won more often than not in cold weather games. The 49ers have won three straight against Green Bay dating back to last season, and I think they make it four straight on Sunday. They are the better team in this matchup, and their style of play is much more conducive to the weather conditions they’ll be playing in.
