49ers vs Panthers Free NFL Playoff Picks: The Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers will meet for the second time this season. This time the stakes will be significantly higher, with a trip to the NFC championship on the line.

Panthers 49ers Free Picks

Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers have won seven straight games and look to continue their hot streak in Carolina vs Cam Newton and the Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers captured their fourth division title in team history this year, and did it behind one of the league’s best defenses behind star middle linebacker and pro Luke Kuechly. The Panthers got a big win in week 16, defeating the New Orleans Saints in week 16 17-13 behind a last minute drive lead by Cam Newton as he tossed a game winning touchdown to Domenik Hixon. Their #1 wide receiver Steve Smith was hurt in that contest but yet Carolina pulled together for a great team win. They finished off the season with a win in Atlanta, again without the services of Steve Smith. The Panthers are 7-1 at home this season, with their only loss coming in week 1 to Seattle 12-7.

San Francisco advanced to the divisional round with a 23-20 win at Green Bay in one of the coldest games of the year. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick led the way with 227 yards passing and 98 yards rushing on 7 rushing attempts. The 49ers have been one of the hottest teams in the league. They’ve won 7 games in a row, and are actually only 4 points away from a 14 game win streak. They suffered a 1 point loss at home to Carolina, and the following week lost by 3 in New Orleans game. The game in New Orleans should have been a victory, but due to a controversial penalty against linebacker Ahmad Brooks, the Saints were able to tie the game and eventually get the victory. The 49ers are a different team now, as they have all the key pieces in place and are peaking at the right time.

This game is pretty simple to break down. Forget the week 10 matchup; the 49ers are a far better team now. In that game, Colin Kaepernick was sacked 6 times, because he basically had no targets. He was without Vernon Davis, who left in the first quarter due to a concussion, and they didn’t have Michael Crabtree. When I watch this 49er team now, Crabtree makes a huge difference. He made his presence known last week with 8 receptions for 132 yards receiving. He’s been a difference maker ever since his return, and they are undefeated with him in the lineup this season. Cam Newton makes his first playoff appearance, and even though he’s been good in big games this season, the playoffs are a totally different situation. I really think San Francisco is the better team here, and have a lot of momentum coming in to Sunday’s contest. I think the key to this matchup is who’s offense will be able to sustain longer drives, and when you look at both offenses compared to the defenses they will be facing, San Francisco has the edge. With a full stable of weapons this time around, I expect Kaepernick to have a lot more success on Sunday and lead his team to their third straight NFC championship.
