Monday NFL analysis: Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts take on the high octane offense of the Philadelphia Eagles on ESPN’s Monday Night Football from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Colts are coming off a 31-24 loss to Denver last Sunday night. The Colts were down 24-7 at halftime, but one thing you know is that Andrew Luck and the Colts are never out of it. Luck rallied his team in the second half, and had a chance to tie it late in the fourth quarter, only to fall short in the final minutes. Luck passed for a game high 37o yards and 2 touchdowns but threw 2 interceptions. The run game was nonexistent, and that was mainly due to the Colts falling behind so quickly. Trent Richardson was once again ineffective with just 20 yards on 6 carries yet did have 3 receptions for 31 yards. Reggie Wayne looked fully recovered from his ACL injury, catching 9 balls for 98 yards, while running back Ahmad Bradshaw was a factor in the passing game with 5 receptions for 70 yards. Robert Mathis was surely missed, as the pass rush was ineffective as they only had one sack of Peyton Manning.

The Philadelphia Eagles survived a scare in week 1, coming back from a 17 point deficit to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-17. Nick Foles had 322 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles did well in the run game, rushing for almost 150 yards. Sproles could be a major factor for the Eagles this season, with his speed and skills of catching the ball out of backfield; he is definitely a great fit for this offense. Jeremy Maclin made his return from an ACL injury in week 1, and looked impressive catching a 68 yard touchdown pass from Foles in the 4th quarter. Tight end Zach Ertz also had a big game; the 6’5″ target had 3 receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown. The Philadelphia defense is improved this year, as head coach Chip Kelly has had a full offseason and I fully expect them to be better this season.

These two teams can light up the scoreboard and I can see a lot of scoring tonight, so I think the over is a solid play. Indianapolis can be vulnerable to the run, and I really like getting points with the explosive run game Philadelphia has. Indianapolis can’t afford to go 0-2, but I can’t base my a large part of my analysis on a team being in a must-win situation. Look at New Orleans this week, a team that couldn’t afford to go 0-2 and probably should have handled their business against Cleveland and look what happens. I’m sure Lucas Oil stadium is going to be an electric atmosphere, but what’s the best way to deal with a hostile crowd? A hurry-up offense that can score quickly. I’m grabbing the points here as even though Indianapolis is a solid team at home, Philadelphia has the weapons on offense and in my opinion has the better defense. I expect the Colts to win a game that comes down to the wire, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Philadelphia pull out the win.
