Monday night NFL analysis: The Detroit Lions take on the New York Giants in the first game of the Monday Night Football doubleheader from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

The Lions had a coaching change in the offseason after yet another late season collapse in 2013. Jim Schwartz was replaced with Jim Caldwell, who was the offensive coordinator in Baltimore. Caldwell also led the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2009-2010 season. Detroit’s quarterback Matt Stafford certainly has the weapons on offense, and it all starts with Calvin Johnson, who is regarded as the premier wide receiver in the NFL. They also signed former Seattle Seahawk Golden Tate in the offseason to add to the aerial attack. They also drafted tight end Eric Ebron, who they are expecting big things from. In the backfield they have Reggie Bush, who is a threat from anywhere on the field, and Joique Bell. On defense they have a fierce front four led by defensive tackle Ndomukong Suh, they also have an up and coming pass rusher in 2nd year defensive end Ziggy Ansah. They have a veteran group of linebackers led by Stephen Tulloch. The secondary is led by corner Rashean Mathis, who is getting up there in age. The secondary is lacking for lack of a better word, as the team just worked out Champ Bailey recently.

The New York Giants will be looking to start the 2014 season a little better than 2013, where they started the season 0-6. They did manage to win 7 of their next 10 games, but missed the playoffs. They had offensive line issues all last season, and now have a new offensive coordinator in Ben McAdoo, who was the quarterback coach in Green Bay. The offense has looked somewhat lackluster in the preseason, as Eli Manning struggles were evident. In the fourth preseason game, Manning showed some progress on an 11 play 91 yard scoring drive in the 2nd quarter. Manning has a good wide receiving corps, with Victor Cruz and Reuben Randle. Leading the way in the backfield for Big Blue is Rashad Jennings, along with rookie Andre Williams, Both backs will be key in the Giants success this season, as they did lose David Wilson, who was forced to retire due to a neck injury. On defense, premier pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul is fully healthy after an injury plagued 2013 campaign. They have a solid linebacker group led by Jon Beason, who is also fully healthy. New York upgraded their secondary in the offseason, signing Walter Thurmond III and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Add those two with corner Prince Amukamara and safety Antrel Rolle, the Giants have a solid secondary. Another acquisition was kick returner Trindon Holliday, an electric returner that is more than capable of taking it to the house on any kickoff.

There’s been a lot of negative talk about the Giants offense in the preseason, and a lot of high expectation for Detroit. This public perception creates value, and that’s why I’m grabbing the points with the Giants tonight. Detroit does have a lot of playmakers on offense, but the Giants have the players on defense that can also make plays. The Lions defense and secondary especially are vulnerable. I really like the Giants to stay within the number tonight, as I they are most dangerous when the public counts them out. I’ll gladly take the points with a team that is notoriously good on the road, and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road contests.
