Thursday Night Football Picks

The AFC North leading Cincinnati Bengals head to South Beach on Thursday to take on he struggling Miami Dolphins. The 6-2 Bengals are fresh off a 49-9 thrashing of the New York Jets last Sunday. The 3-4 Dolphins looked like the class of the AFC East on Sunday…for the first half. The Dolphins lead New England 17-3 at half, but turnovers and miscues eventually resulted in the Patriots scoring 24 unanswered, resulting in a 27-17 defeat.

The Bengals have been one of the top teams in the AFC this year. Winners of 4 straight, they present a balanced offensive attack, with explosiveness at the skill positions. Rookie Giovanni Bernard has provided a spark for the offense, as he is a threat in both the running game and the passing game. Everyone knows the talents of AJ Green, but wide receiver Marvin Jones has also emerged as a threat, as he torched the Jets for 4 touchdowns. QB Andy Dalton has been in the zone as of late. In his last 3 games, he’s passed for 1263 yards, with 11 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. It seems Dalton has definitely taken a step forward this year. While the offense has been on point, the defense has been even better. Geno Atkins leads a fearsome front four that is very disruptive. Cincinnati is 8th in the league in total defense, allowing 322 yards per game.

The Miami Dolphins, losers of 4 straight, are at a crossroads in their season. The Dolphins looked like they were ready to take the next step at the beginning of the season. They started out 3-0, and even had a big road win at Indianapolis. The offense has been inconsistent, and the offensive line has allowed a league high 32 sacks, which can never be good with a 2nd year quarterback. They rank 28th in the league in total offense, while the defense has been respectable ranking 12th in the league in total defense. This Dolphins team isn’t a bad team, they just can’t put it together for 4 quarters. All of their losses, with exception to the blowout in New Orleans, have been close. They lost by a field goal to Baltimore, and lost to Buffalo, at home, which was a real head scratcher. There has also been some distractions in the Miami locker room. Starting tackle Jonathan Martin abruptly left the team after a team prank in the lunch room this week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in his place. Starting center Mike Pouncey has been subpoenaed by the Massachusetts State Police due to his relationship with former New England tight end Aaron Hernandez.

The Dolphins have their backs against the wall, and the crowd will be rockin in South Beach Friday night. There is one disturbing trend as far as the Bengals are concerned. After some of their big wins this year, they’ve struggled. After beating Green Bay at home 34-30, they lost to Cleveland 17-6. After beating New England 13-6, they struggled against the Bills, and escaped with a 3 point overtime victory. The Bengals also have some injury concerns as starting middle linebacker Rey Maualuga will miss some time with a sprained MCL. The Bengals also might be in a bad look ahead spot, as they travel the Baltimore next week.

Outlook for this Week 8 NFL Matchup: Cincinnati is playing some good sound football right now, no doubt about it. They are 6-2 in the division, and you have to wonder how they are handling their success.  Miami is the desperate team, and need to stop the bleeding in a hurry. If they can keep Ryan Tannehill upright, they have a chance to win this game. I’m taking the home dog that is more desperate against a team that is coming off a blowout win. You have to remember in football, and especially in the NFL, you have to forget what you saw last week.
