Free Week 17 Sunday NFL Picks: The Baltimore Ravens need a win coupled with a loss by either San Diego or Miami; it won’t be easy as they travel to Cincinnati to take on the 10-5 Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals are coming an impressive 42-14 win over ravens-bengals-picksMinnesota, and with Baltimore losing they clinched the AFC North title. In the month of December, quarterback Andy Dalton has been excellent completing 64.3% of his passes for 1061 yards with 10 touchdowns and only one interception. Dalton sure has the weapons on offense, with receivers A.J. Green (1365 yds 10 TD), Marvin Jones (651 yds 9 TD). The tight ends are also a factor, with Jermaine Gresham (461 yds) and rookie Tyler Eifert (406 yds). The Bengals backfield features a 1-2 punch with the workhorse back Benjarvus Green-Ellis (690 yds) and explosive rookie Giovanni Bernard (673 yds rush, 463 yds rec). Despite losing defensive tackle Geno Atkins and cornerback Leon Hall for the season, the defense is still solid. The Bengals rank 5th in the league in total defense allowing 311.1 yards per game. They allow only 99.8 yards rushing (6th in the league) and 222.4 (7th in the league) yards passing per game.

The Baltimore Ravens come into Sunday’s contest on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs are concerned. They had their four game win streak snapped last Sunday in a 41-7 blowout loss at home to New England. The defeat was the worst loss of the Jim Harbaugh-Joe Flacco era. With a win in Cincinnati and either a loss by Miami or San Diego, they can grab the #6 seed. In last Sunday’s loss, Joe Flacco was ineffective, but then Joe Flacco has struggled this year completing 58.9% of his passes for 3720 yards, with 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. The running game has not been a factor this year as they are only averaging 85.4 yards per game (28th in the league). Torrey Smith leads the wide receivers with 62 receptions and 1101 yards. Marlon Brown (494 yds 6 TD) and Jacoby Jones (444 yds) are also key contributors. The defense has performed admirably despite losing Ray Lewis to retirement and Ed Reed to free agency. Free agent acquisitions Elvis Dumervil (9.5 sacks) and Daryl Smith (118 tackles 48 solo) have been significant playmakers on a defense is ranked 9th in the league, allowing 105.1 yards rushing and 226.7 yards passing per game. You always have to account for Terrell Suggs, who leads the team with 10 sacks on the year.

The Ravens’ backs are against the wall here, and there’s no doubt they will bring maximum effort on Sunday. There is something to be said for veteran leadership, and the Ravens certainly have it. Teams that lose by 30 or more points the previous week usually bring a focused effort the following week. Cincinnati has been dominant at home this year, going 7-0 straight up and against the number, but you have to take into consideration that this is a divisional game with huge playoff implications. The Ravens have only lost by more than a field goal twice this year, and both of those losses were with teams playing with playoff revenge (New England and Denver). I think Cincinnati picks up the win on Sunday, but it will be a close one.
