Sunday Saints vs Panthers Week 16 NFL Picks & Analysis: The New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers meet for the second time this season with the NFC South division and the #2 seed on the line.

The Saints come in to Sunday’s matchup coming off a disappointing loss last Sunday to St. Louis 27-16. Drew Brees was sacked 4 times in the contest, and were 5 of 15 on third down conversions. They outgained the Rams by 130 yards, but were done in by 3 turnovers, 2 of those being Drew Brees interceptions. They are currently 10-4 and hold the #2 seed in the NFC. The Saints have had a tough road as of late, losing at Seattle 34-7, playing Carolina at home, then traveling to St. Louis. Now they travel to Carolina and find themselves having lossed two of their last three games. New Orleans is without a doubt a different team on the road this year, as they’ve gone 3-4 in those contests. They rank 7th in the league in total offense, averaging 302.8 yards passing and 93.3 yards rushing per game. The Saints defense is ranked 6th in the league allowing 319 yards and 19.2 points per game.

Carolina rebounded nicely after losing at New Orleans in week 14 and having their eight game win streak snapped. Carolina took care of business defeating the New York Jets 30-20. The Panthers have only lossed at home once this season, a 12-7 loss to Seattle in what was a very competitive game. In the other six wins, they’ve won by an average of 18.6 points per game.  Cam Newton is having a great 2013 campaign, completing 62.3% of his passes for 3049 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also has rushed for 507 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per rushing attempt. While they rank at the bottom of the league in passing, their rushing attack is ranked 8th in the league averaging 129.4 yards per game. Their key contributors are Deangelo Williams (743 yds), Newton, and Mike Tolbert (331 yds). In the passing game, they have a lot of capable options in wide receiver Steve Smith (701 yds), Greg Olsen (739), and Brandon Lafell (614 yds). While their offense isn’t putting up the most impressive numbers, the defense most certainly is. Carolinas defense ranks 2nd in the league in scoring defense, allowing only 14.9 points per game. They rank 2nd in the league in total defense, allowing 296.3 yards per game. Carolina has a turnover differential of +11, and their defense has forced 27 turnovers this season.

This will be the biggest game of Cam Newton’s career, so one has to wonder how he will respond. He had his fair share of big games in college, and was successful in those outings. I’m not putting any stock into what happened in the last meeting between these two teams. Why? Because it’s very obvious that the Saints are a different team on the road. Drew Brees’ completion percentage is significantly lower in away games. 73.2% at home, 63.4% on the road. You can also look at the number of interceptions, only 3 at home, and 7 on the road. Their defensive stats on the road are even more significant. At home the Saints defense has 26 sacks and 8 interceptions, on the road just 17 sacks and only 2 interceptions. These numbers just show what kind of home field advantage they have, and as we’ve seen this season on the road, they’re just not the same team. We’ve seen this season what kind of trouble the New Orleans offense has had on the road against strong defensive fronts. Carolina has shown that they are a team to be reckoned with, and I think their defense, along with a strong dose of the running game will lead them to victory on Sunday.
