Chargers vs Broncos Thursday Night NFL Free Picks & Game Analysis: chargers-vs-broncosThe Denver Broncos will continue their quest for the #1 seed in the AFC on Thursday night as they host the San Diego Chargers.

Denver has won four games out of five since the bye week, and come into Thursday night off a 51-28 beatdown of Tennessee on Sunday. Peyton Manning silenced his critics that said he could not play in cold weather. Manning completed 39 of 59 passes for 397 yards and 4 touchdowns. Peyton was spreading the ball around, as a lot of wide receivers contributed. Julius Thomas made his return after missing two games due to injury, and was effective with 88 yards and 1 touchdown. Wes Welker left the game with a concussion, his second this year, and will be inactive for Thursday night’s game. Knowshon Moreno and Montee ball split carries, and combined for 154 yards on the ground. Denver has had a well balanced attack all year, averaging 341.2 yards passing (1st in the NFL) and 124.4 (12th) yards rushing per game. Their defense has struggled at times, allowing 274.3 yards passing per game, which ranks near the bottom of the league. They allow 99.8 yards rushing per game, yet that stat can be misleading, as they’ve had large leads and opposing teams are mostly passing and playing catch up.

San Diego is currently 6-7, and is fighting for a wildcard spot. San Diego kept their playoff hopes alive with a dominant win over the New York Giants 37-14. Phillip Rivers is having a stellar season, completing 70.3% of his passes for 3882 yards with 26 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Rookie Keenan Allen has stepped up as a main target for Rivers, catching 61 balls for 902 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tight end Antonio Gates has been dependable as usual with 68 receptions for 776 yards and 3 touchdowns. Another tight end target has also emerged, as Ladarius Green has been worked into the mix. Over the past 3 games, Green has only 5 receptions, but those receptions are for big gains. This season Green has only 16 receptions on 27 targets, yet has averaged 22.1 yards per reception. Danny Woodhead and Ryan Mathews lead the backfield and have combined for 1215 yards rushing and 691 yards receiving. Woodhead is the bigger receiving threat of the two with his quickness, as he has averaged 8.2 yards per reception and 6 receiving touchdowns on the season. The Charger defense ranks near the bottom of the NFL, allowing 266.7 yards through the air, and 115.8 yards rushing.

These two teams met in week 10, with Denver winning 28-20. In that last meeting, San Diego was down 28-6 at the half, yet made it a game by the fourth quarter and ended up losing by 8. San Diego actually dominated the time of possession and the stats would tell you the game was a bit more competitive than the score would indicate. San Diego is without a doubt the more desperate team, yet Denver knows they can’t afford a loss, as New England is right behind them at 10-3, and own the tie break between the two. The Chargers showed they are capable of going on the road and winning in a hostile environment. Just a few weeks back they won at Arrowhead over the Chiefs 41-38. Denver is playing at a high level, but San Diego has played really well in recent weeks. With their backs against the wall, I think the Chargers will give Denver all they can handle Thursday night.
