2013 Free Week 15 Sunday NFL picks: Lions at Eagles

Date and Time: Sunday, December 8th, 2013, 1:00 pm on FOX
Game Line: Philadelphia -3 (from JustBet)
Over/Under: 53.5
Sunday NFL analysis: The Philadelphia Eagles will look to make it five straight wins as they host NFC North division leading Detroit Lions.

Philadelphia is sitting atop the NFC East tied with Dallas at 7-5, although Dallas does own the tiebreak as of now. The Eagles have won four straight behind the arm of quarterback Nick Foles who has been nothing short of sensational. During the four game win streak, Foles has completed 67.9% of his passes for 1169 with 13 touchdowns and zero interceptions. For the season, Foles has passed for 1791 yards with 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Their quick paced offense has given defenses fits and they aren’t just throwing the ball with success, their running it effectively as well. The Eagles rushing attack ranks 2nd in the league averaging 146.8 yards per game. LeSean McCoy is having an outstanding season, with 1088 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns, while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Their defense has improved over recent weeks, yet they still struggle against the pass, yielding 296.8 yards through the air. They do however have a +7 turnover ratio; they take care of the ball on offense, and have forced 22 turnovers on defense.

The Detroit Lions are 7-5 and hold a one game lead over Chicago in the NFC North. They are coming off a 40-10 blowout win on Thanksgiving Day over Green Bay. Detroit ranks 2nd in total offense in the NFL, averaging 424 total yards per game (336 pass, 121 rush). Matt Stafford has completed 59% of his passes for 3825 yards with 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Reggie Bush is having a great season, with 854 yards rushing and 448 yards receiving and 8 total touchdowns. Anytime you talk about the Detroit offense, you have to talk about Megatron. Calvin Johnson is having yet another impressive season, with 72 receptions for 1299 yards and 12 touchdowns. Detroit’s defense has its positives and negatives. They are one of the best teams defending the run, allowing only 82.7 yards per game. Their pass defense leaves little to be desired as they allow 262 yards through the air. They do have a disruptive pass rush, tallying 27 sacks on the year. Rookie Ezekiel Ansah has come on as of late, with 2 sacks in each of his last two games. The Lions have had ball security issues, and have a turnover differential of -8.

Philadelphia has been on an impressive run as of late, but you have to take a look at the competition. Last week they won against a good Arizona team, however they were outgained in yardage and benefited from 3 Cardinal turnovers. In the other three games, they faced a Green Bay team in disarray, Oakland coming off a big win against Pittsburgh, and a lifeless Washington team. Philadelphia’s offense is based on the run, and stopping the run is the strength of the Detroit defense. I think Detroit could very well force Nick Foles to pass the ball more than usual, and force him in to some bad decisions. I don’t see Philadelphia’s defense causing the Lions much trouble, as they aren’t very good statically against the pass or run. I am a tad hesitant to take Detroit here after such a big win, but I feel they match up well with Philadelphia and think they win in a shootout.

Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles Free Pick:  Detroit +3 Over 53.5
Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles Game Prediction: Detroit 31 Philadelphia 24
