Sunday’s Packers vs. Cowboys Free Picks & Analysis: Two teams battling for playoff spots will meet in AT&T stadium as the 6-6-1 Green Bay Packers face the Dallas Cowboys.

The Green Bay Packers have faced a lot of adversity this year, and it starts with losing Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has been out since suffering a separated shoulder in a week 9 contest against Chicago. Since the injury, they have won just once, tied with Minnesota, and lost the other four games. Their season was in a tailspin until last week when they picked up a much needed victory. With all of this happening, they are still only ½ game out of the division. Matt Flynn will get the start on Sunday, and he actually fared pretty well last weekend, completing 75% of his passes for 258 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He’s had his share of struggles this season, yet he’s gotten more reps and seems to be getting better. Rookie Eddie Lacy has been a great addition to the Packers. Lacy has rushed for 887 yards and 7 touchdowns. James Starks has also been contributing, rushing for 346 yards and averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Jordy Nelson is having yet another good season, already passing the 1,000 yard plateau. Receivers James Jones (41 rec 643 yds) and Jarrett Boykin (36 rec 546 yds) have also been key contributors. On defense, they allow 246 yards through the air (25th in the NFL) and 122 yards rushing (21st in the NFL) per game. They have some playmakers on defense, AJ Hawk is having one of his more productive seasons, with 107 tackles (41 assisted) and 5 sacks. You can’t ignore Clay Matthews, who has 6 sacks on the year, and is a proven playmaker.

The Dallas Cowboys come into Sunday nights matchup off one of their more disappointing performances of the season. The Cowboys were throttled in Chicago 45-28 as the defense seemed totally lost. The offense looked totally out of sync while Tony Romo was just 11 for 20 with 3 touchdowns. They ran the ball well, but that’s really not saying much considering Chicago’s porous run defense. The loss left them 1 game back of Philadelphia in the NFC East, and now are in a must win situation from here on out, as Philadelphia is showing no signs of slowing down. Luckily Dallas is at home this weekend, where they have only lost one game all year, a 51-48 shootout to Denver. The Cowboys offense for the most part is having a decent year, with Tony Romo passing for 3244 yards and 27 touchdowns with only 7 interceptions. Demarco Murray leads the way in the rushing department with 843 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Dez Bryant is on his way to a 1,000 yard season, with 908 yards receiving and 10 TD’s. As everyone knows, the offense isn’t the issue in Dallas, it’s the defense. As some would say, there’s no D in Big D as they are ranked dead last in the league in total defense, allowing 298 yards passing, and 128.4 yards rushing per game. To make matters worse, Sean Lee, the team’s second leading tackler, has been ruled out for Sunday’s contest with a neck injury sustained last Monday night.

Both teams are in must-win situations here; as both are in second in their respective divisions and a wild card spot is somewhat out of reach with both wildcard spots currently filled with teams that are 9-4. Dallas’ defensive issues are very concerning, and it wouldn’t shock me to see Matt Flynn to have one of his better days on Sunday. Even though the Packers offense is somewhat limited with Flynn, they should be able to run the ball effectively to set up the play action pass. The Cowboys offense should be able to put up some points as well, but I don’t think they can cover this big of a number. I think the Cowboys pick up the win here in a relatively high scoring game. The defense without Lee is a concern, but I think the offense bails them out in this one.
