Game Line: San Diego pick (from JustBet)

Sunday NFL analysis: The 5-6 San Diego Chargers will look to stay in the hunt for a wildcard spot as they host the 7-4 Cincinnati Bengals.

The Chargers are coming off their biggest win of the season beating the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead 41-38 where Philip Rivers went 27 for 39 for 392 yards with 3 touchdowns. That win stopped a three game losing streak, yet they were competitive in those three contests. Rivers has had a solid year, completing 70% of his passes for 3381 yards with 22 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Tight end Antonio Gates has been his go-to guy with 59 receptions for 685 yards. Rookie Keenan Allen has stepped up as well, catching 50 balls for 737 yards and 3 touchdowns. The addition of Danny Woodhead has paid big dividends, with 266 yards rushing and 469 receiving yards. Running back Ryan Mathews has finally been able to stay healthy, and he’s been a factor rushing for 721 yards averaging 4.4 yards per carry. The offensive output has truly been a team effort as different guys have stepped up throughout the year.

The Cincinnati Bengals are coming off the bye week, but in the game before took care of business against Cleveland 41-20. Judging by quarterback Andy Dalton’s performance, you wouldn’t have thought that they won the game. Dalton struggled, going 13/27 for 93 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Dalton’s struggles in have raised some eyebrows, completing only 47% of his passes for 367 yards with 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. The Bengals backfield features a 1-2 punch with the workhorse back Benjarvus Green Ellis (522 yards) and explosive rookie Giovanni Bernard (464 yds rush, 345 rec). The defense is still getting it done despite losing defensive tackle Geno Atkins and cornerback Leon Hall for the season. They rank seventh in the league in total defense, and are allowing only 18.7 points per game. Linebacker Rey Maualuga will make his return from injury; however leading tackler Vontaze Burfict is questionable with an ankle injury suffered in practice this week.

The Bengals’ struggles on the road are well documented, as they are 2-4 away from Paul Brown Stadium. San Diego had the type of win last week that can jumpstart a playoff run. This will be the one and only trip to the West Coast for the Bengals, and I feel they are in a bad spot here, coming off a bye and playing a team with a lot of confidence. If Burfict is out, that will be a big blow to the Bengals defense. The Chargers at home is a tough task, and with a showdown looming against the Colts next week, the Bengals might be looking ahead a bit. Given the fact that Rivers and the Charger offense are playing at a high level and with Dalton struggling; I think San Diego gets the win here as they are the more desperate team that can’t afford another loss.
