Sunday NFL analysis:  The 4-6 St. Louis Rams, fresh off their bye week, host the 6-4 Chicago Bears in an NFC conference tilt. St. Louis had high expectations going into this season however it’s been a disappointing one as quarterback Sam Bradford Free NFL Picks Bonuswent down with a season ending knee injury in week seven. Despite going 1-2 since Bradford’s absence the Rams have been competitive including almost upsetting Seattle in week 8. Kellen Clemons has filled in for Bradford at quarterback and has completed 53.5% of his passes for 634 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Over the past few weeks the rookies for St. Louis have stepped up and in some cases exceeded expectations. Rookie running back Zac Stacy has really come on as of late. In his last three games Stacy has averaged 107 yards per game on the ground solidifying himself as the lead back. Rookie Tavon Austin opened some eyes in week 10 in a stunning 38-8 blowout of Indianapolis. Austin showed why he was worthy of being the eighth overall pick with two touchdowns on 158 yards receiving along with a 98 yard punt return for a touchdown that made plenty of highlight reels. On defense, the Rams have two defensive ends that are very disruptive and can get to the quarterback. Robert Quinn and Chris Long have combined for 18.5 sacks on the season. St. Louis ranks eighteenth in the league in total defense giving up an average of 351.8 yards per game.

The Chicago Bears have also had injuries at the quarterback position, yet veteran Josh McCown has done an admirable job filling in for the injured Jay Cutler. This season, McCown has completed 60.4% of his passes for 754 yards and five touchdowns and 0 interceptions. The Bears have two tall receiving threats in 6’4″ Brandon Marshall and 6’3″ Alshon Jeffery, who have combined for 1646 yards and 11 touchdowns. Running back Matt Forte has had a productive season with 774 yards rushing and 374 yards receiving with 8 touchdowns. While the offense hasn’t really been a concern, the defense has been, as they are not the same Chicago defense of recent years. Their run defense ranks near the bottom of the league allowing 133.9 yards per game. They have also given up a lot of points ranking 26th in the league, allowing 26.7 points per game.

If the Rams’ week 10 performance at Indianapolis is any indication of where this team is heading then Chicago might be in for a battle on Sunday. The Rams offense has been improving, and with the emergence of rookies Tavon Austin and Zac Stacy it might be a long day for this Chicago defense. As for the Bears, they must protect McCown as they face one of the league’s best pass rushing teams. The Rams have the corners to match up with the tall bear receivers, so Matt Forte might be a big part of the game plan for Chicago. St. Louis is the more desperate team here as they are fighting for a wildcard berth and can’t afford to fall to 4–7. While McCown has performed well, I expect him to come back to reality this week. With an extra week to prepare I expect the Rams to make a few more plays to get the win in a relatively high scoring game.
