Sunday NFL analysis: In what is sure to be one of the more compelling contests this Sunday, the 5-4 Dallas Cowboys meet the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night.Cowboys vs Saints

Dallas comes in to this matchup at 5-4, winning on a last minute drive last week against the Minnesota Vikings. It’s been an up and down year for Dallas, but due to the mediocrity in the NFC North they sit atop the division. The Cowboys have been pretty consistent on offense. Tony Romo is on track for another 4,000 yard season, leading an offense that is fourth in the league in scoring and averaging 342 yards per game. They have struggled to get a consistent ground game going, mainly due to injuries. Demarco Murray has missed significant time, and backups Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar have failed to pick up the slack.

The defense has struggled under first year defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. The Cowboys went from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, which was a surprising move. To say the Kiffin hire hasn’t worked well would be putting it nicely. Dallas ranks second to last in the league in total defense, allowing 419 yards per game. One thing that could help the Cowboys this week is the return of defensive end Demarcus Ware. Ware has missed the past three games with a quadriceps strain, but will be a go on Sunday. It is anticipated that he will not be in every play, but in certain situations.

If you asked Rob Ryan how his transition from Dallas to New Orleans was, he’d probably tell you it’s been fine. The Saints implemented the 3-4 defense, and so far it’s paid off. New Orleans ranks fifth in the league in total defense. Their run defense has struggled this year, and at times has looked dominated at the line of scrimmage. This came in their two losses against the Jets and Patriots, two of the better rushing offenses in the league. Jonathan Vilma, one of the emotional leaders of the defense made his season debut last week returning from injury. Unfortunately, Vilma was placed on injured reserve this week with an undisclosed knee injury.

The Saints offense has been solid for the most part this year as Drew Brees is on pace for another 5,000 yard season. The Saints can score from anywhere on the field with depth at wide receiver and arguably one of the best tight ends in the game, Jimmy Graham. Their offensive output through the air is third in the league, averaging 317 yards per game. However, like Dallas, they have struggled to establish an effective rushing attack.

There could be a lot of points in the Superdome Sunday night, as both teams possess a potent aerial attack. Rob Ryan knows the Dallas offense very well, and knows Romo’s weaknesses which could be a big advantage to the Saints. It really comes down to how the Dallas secondary performs, as they haven’t been up to par against some of the top tier offenses. The Cowboys are really up against it this week, as New Orleans has one of the better home field advantages in the league. Since 2011, the Saints under Sean Payton are undefeated at home with an average margin of victory of 21.6. The Saints lost last week, and I think they take their frustrations out on Dallas.
