Sunday NFL analysis:  Carolina has been one of the surprise stories this year. While the Panthers have won four in a row, it hasn’t been against the stiffest competition. The teams that Carolina has beaten during this streak have a combined record of 7-27. That’s not exactly anything to get excited about, but to their credit, they’ve won those games convincingly by an average margin of 20.5 points. Colin Kaepernick vs Cam Newton Cam Newton is having a pretty good year, and his decision making has improved tremendously. Newton has completed 64% of his passes for 1801 yards and 13 touchdowns, with 7 interceptions. The Panther defense has been outstanding, ranking second in the league in total defense and ranking 1st in scoring defense. The Panthers are also allowing only allowing 79 yards rushing per game, second in the league.

Speaking of winning streaks, the 49ers have won 5 in a row following a two week slump early in the season. After losing two straight to the Seahawks and Colts, head coach Jim Harbaugh has righted the ship. During their win streak, the 49ers have been absolutely manhandling teams, winning by an average of 22.6 points per game and scoring 30+ in all of their last 5 games. In weeks 1 and 2, it was evident that quarterback Colin Kaepernick missed Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham. However, after that 1-2 start, San Francisco went to their bread and butter; the running game. In the last 5 games, they’ve rushed for 183 yards per game. Oh yea, and the 49ers defense has been nothing short of stout as usual, ranking third in the league in total defense with key players like Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis missing for several games.  Rookie Safety Eric Reid has been great and is a contender for defensive Rookie of the Year..

San Francisco and Carolina both enter this week with a lot of momentum, both playing playoff caliber football.  However, San Francisco is coming off the bye. In some cases this can hinder momentum, but this 49ers team is too well coached for that to happen to them. Giving a brilliant football mind like Jim Harbaugh two weeks to prepare, using the bye get key players healthy, and also playing this big matchup at home are all big advantages for the 49ers that aren’t represented in the 5.5 point spread.

Both teams have big games coming up next week. The 49ers are traveling to New Orleans, while the Panthers are home on Monday night against the Patriots. In this case, short term focus is key, an area where I give the advantage to the 49ers. San Francisco is used to success, and knows how to handle it. While Carolina is playing good football and beating up weaker opponents like the 49ers, the Panthers are a young team that hasn’t quite reached Superbowl caliber status.  They also may looking ahead a bit to that big Monday night matchup with the high profile New England Patriots. Cam Newton was pretty much a non-factor in his game against Seattle, as 3-4 defenses have been “Superman’s Kryptonite” in his short career.  All this leads me to believe that Cam will struggle against a comparable defense with 2 weeks to prepare. We may see that frustrated/angry side of the bi-polarish Newton.  I do think Carolina’s defense may keep them in the game and force a few punts/field goals from the Niners. But in the end, and in modern 49er fashion, that physical San Francisco offensive line will wear down the Carolina in the 2nd half, proving why this Panthers team isn’t quite ready for the Superbowl discussion.
