Free Saints/Seahawks 2014 Divisional Playoff Picks & Analysis: The Seattle Seahawks will look to advance to their second NFC championship game in the team’s history when they host the New Orleans Saints on Saturday afternoon at Century Link Field.

New Orleans comes into this matchup 8 point underdogs, and are coming off their first ever road playoff victory. They are no stranger to the hostile environment in Seattle. Back in 2011, the Saints were upset in the playoffs 41-36, and this year they were blown out 34-7. The Saints have struggled on the road this season, going 3-5 in the regular season.  Those losses came against the likes of New England, the New York Jets, St. Louis, and Carolina. They silenced critics last weekend, as they won their first ever playoff road game, defeating Philadelphia 26-24. New Orleans has even taken extra measures to help their success on the road this week, painting a Seahawk logo on their practice field. Peyton is a coach that is very meticulous, and when it comes to game planning, he’s one of the best in the league.

Seattle earned the #1 seed this year, by dominating the opposition with a smothering defense and a balanced offense. Up until week 16, they had not lost a home game since December of 2011. However, the Arizona Cardinals, one of the hottest teams in the league towards the end of the season, defeated the Seahawks in their building 17-10. Since the big week 13 win, Seattle has shown some vulnerability, going 2-2 since. The loss of cornerback Brandon Browner hasn’t helped, yet their offense in December has sputtered. Seattle has averaged only 263 yards of total offense in their last four contests.

Over the course of the season, it was believed that if Seattle got the #1 seed in the NFC, they would be a shoe-in for the Super Bowl….I don’t think that’s the case anymore. In the last meeting between these two in week 13, Seattle was dominant. There was a sense of invulnerability all season when it came to Seattle playing at home, until they lost to Arizona. Arizona runs a 3-4 defense, the same type of defense that New Orleans runs. Could it be possible that New Orleans takes the film from that game and implements that into their game plan? Yes, it’s very possible. You will also hear about how New Orleans can’t stop the run. Well, they answered those questions last weekend, when they held the Eagles #1 ranked rushing attack to just 80 yards. People often get caught up in the offensive numbers when they talk about the Saints, yet people forget they had the 4th best defense in the NFL this year. The line opened up 4 ½ when these teams met, and closed at 7. This time around, the line opened up at 8 or 8 ½. I actually like Sean Peyton and Drew Brees getting points this Saturday; they will be coming in with a totally different game plan. You have a team coming in that lost the previous matchup by 27 points, with a chip on their shoulder, against a team that everyone is picking to go to the Super Bowl. I’ve seen this situation before. Back in 2010, New England blew out the New York Jets 45-3 in week 13. Well, in the divisional round, the Jets came back to Foxboro and shocked the Patriots, winning 28-21. I not only like getting the points this week, I like New Orleans to win the game. It’s only human nature to be so dominant in one game, to think only a month and a half later the same outcome is likely. Like 2011, the underdog Seahawks spoiled the party for New Orleans. This Saturday I expect the Saints to return the favor.
