Saturday LSU vs. Alabama NCAA Football analysis: LSU @ AlabamaOn Saturday night the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide host the #13 ranked LSU Tigers.  The Alabama-LSU rivalry has been one of the marquee matchups in college football for the past few years.

Alabama has continued to be the dominant college football program in 2013. Since their game at Texas A&M, the Crimson Tide defense has not allowed more than 10 points in a single game. They’ve also won those games by an average margin of 39 points. The Alabama defense is ranked fifth in the country in team defense and first in scoring defense, allowing an average of 9.8 points per game. The offense is a balanced attack, averaging 250 yards per game through the air and 210 on the ground. Their quarterback, senior AJ McCarron is extremely efficient, completing 69% of his passes for 1862 yards, with 16 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. The Crimson Tide backfield has plenty of talent, running back TJ Yeldon leads the way with 729 yards and 10 touchdowns.

For LSU coach Les Miles, this isn’t the average LSU Tigers squad. This year’s team has one of the best offenses for LSU in recent memory. Senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger has completed 65% of his passes for 2492 yards and 19 touchdowns with 7 interceptions. The Tigers have 2 outstanding receivers in Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry, who have combined for 1891 yards receiving. LSU can get it done on the ground too, averaging 200 yards rushing per game. The defense, which is usually one of the best in the country, is having somewhat of a down year. LSU gives up an average of 351 yards per game and 21.9 points per game.

Alabama has been dominant without a question; however Mettenberger had a lot of success last year against this same Alabama defense. Last year LSU took Alabama down to the wire, with the Tide needing a touchdown with 51 seconds left to get the victory. This year, LSU’s offensive success is due in part to offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Cameron has a very good understanding of Nick Saban’s defense. Cameron has coached against Saban in college and in the NFL as an offensive coordinator or head coach.

Seeing how LSU’s defense has fared against most of the SEC this year, I don’t expect them to pose a threat to Alabama. LSU has the offense to compete with Alabama, but I expect the Crimson Tide defense to make one or two key plays to turn the momentum. LSU will keep this close for the most part, but I think Alabama gets the win.
