Saturday NFL analysis: The New England Patriots will look to reach their second AFC championship game in 3 years when they host the upstart Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts,

New England has been one of the more resilient teams this season, as head coach Bill Belichick is in discussion for coach of the year. Their ‘next man up’ philosophy has resulted in a 12-4 record and their fifth straight AFC East division title. The Patriots play a good brand of situational football, and judging by their victories this season you would see it. A last second victory against New Orleans, a huge comeback win over Denver, and an improbable win over Cleveland are classic examples of good coaching, game planning, and situational football. That would sum up the Patriots in a nutshell. They come into Saturday’s matchup winners of two games in a row. Since their last loss at Miami, they’ve been pretty impressive. They throttled Baltimore 41-7 in M&T Bank Stadium, handing the Ravens their worst loss in the Harbaugh-Flacco era. They then clinched the #2 seed behind LeGarrette Blount’s 189 rushing yards en route to a 34-20 victory over Buffalo.

Indianapolis is coming off one of the most impressive comeback victories in last weekend’s wildcard game against Kansas City. The Colts rallied from a 38-10 deficit to defeat the Chiefs last Saturday, as Andrew Luck passed for 443 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Colts come in riding a wave of momentum and on a 4 game winning streak since losing at Cincinnati 42-28 in week 13. The Colts had struggles midway through the season after the loss of wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Since then, they went to a lot of 3 wide receiver set and Donald Brown took the lead role in the backfield. Brown is both a threat in the run game, and the passing game as well. The Colts have some impressive wins this season at San Francisco, and at home against Denver and Seattle.

Indianapolis as stated before has a lot of momentum coming into Saturday’s matchup. They’ve won four straight, but you really need to take a look at those four wins before calling this team a ‘team of destiny’ as many are calling them. Of those four wins, two of them came against two of the AFC bottom feeders, the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. Their other two came against Kansas City. In the first matchup against the Chiefs, Kansas City turned the ball over four times. It is also believed that the Kansas City game plan was vanilla, because the Chiefs knew that they would see them in the playoffs. Well, they were right. They saw them in the playoffs and built a huge lead. However throughout the game they suffered major injuries, as Justin Houston, Jamal Charles, Brandon Flowers, and Donnie Avery all left the game with injuries; all key components of Kansas City’s team. Granted, the comeback was huge, but now they have to turn around and play at New England. This is a New England team that still has a bitter taste in their mouth after an early exit from the playoffs last year. With all the emotion after last week’s comeback win, I can’t see them going to New England and getting the win, and being competitive for that matter. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Colts come out flat, and I think Brady will carve up the defense that gave up 378 yards to Alex Smith. It’s been a great run for the Colts, but with such an emotional win combined with the playoff experience of Belichick and Brady, I can’t foresee an upset here. Luck will have more playoff success in the future, but the Patriots put a stop to it this postseason come Saturday night.
