Sunday NFL analysis: The Carolina Panthers take on the Seattle Seahawks in a matchup of the two top seeds from last years playoffs from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The Carolina Panthers are coming off an embarrasing defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers 38-17. The Panthers had a lot of success last year, and that success was based on their dominant defense. Well, that defense hasn’t been too dominant this season, and as a matter of fact they are ranked 27th in the league in total defense, allowing 388 yards per game and are 29th in the league in scoring defense, giving up 27.8 points per game. Cam Newton is having a decent year, and he seems to be getting healthy after dealing with rib issues earlier in the year. Newton has completed 60.7% of his passes for 1472 yards with 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. His two main targets are tight end Greg Olsen (493 yds, 5 TD) and rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin (477 yds 5 TD). Benjamin has definitely been a player this year, and should be in the running for rookie of the year honors. They’ve struggled to run the ball effectively this season, and that is mainly due to multiple injuries in the backfield.

The Seattle Seahawks are definitely the hunted nowadays, and they are getting their opponents best effort. The defending champions have lost two straight, and are coming off a 28-26 loss to division foe St. Louis. Before they left for their game in St. Louis, the team was told that wide receiver Percy Harvin was traded to the New York Jets. Their were reports that Harvin had caused a divide in the locker room, and therefore he was shipped out of town. Quarterback Russell Wilson has really stepped up his game this season, and is making plays with his legs as well. In a losing effort last Sunday, Wilson passed 313 yards and ran for 106. His two main targets are wide recievers Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kerse, who have combined for 528 yards receiving. Marshawn lynch leads the way out of the backfield, and is averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Their defense hasn’t been as effective compared to last year, and it’s obvious in one stat…sacks. The Seahawks have only 7 sacks this season, and they aren’t forcing many turnovers either, with just 5 this season.

I’m rolling with the home dog and grabbing the points with the Carolina Panthers. Seattle’s defense isn’t intimidating anyone lately, and I expect the Panthers to put forth their strongest performance to date. The Seahawks have a quarterback that can extend the play, but so does Carolina, and Seattle just isn’t getting to the quarterback and I think Cam Newton will have time for his targets to get open. Seattle was the only team to beat Carolina at home last season, so I expect Carolina to be sound and focused. Many people might want to fade Carolina after last weeks performance. Well, I’ll be honest, I was on Green Bay because it was a bad spot for the Panthers. It was their second straight road game, and coming off a long game in Cincinnati that went to overtime. Now we’ll take a look at Seattle. They’re playing their second road game, and traveling cross country. I’m just not sold on this Seattle team right now, and I think there’s still a lot of question marks about their receiving corps with Harvin leaving. Would you want to lay points on the road with a team that’s locker room that has question marks and traveling cross country playing their second straight road game? Neither would I. I think Seattle pulls out a much needed win here, but the Panthers will give them all they can handle.
