Sunday NFL analysis: The Chicago Bears host the Green Bay Packers in an NFC North clash with the winner claiming the NFC North crown and advancing to the playoffs.

The Chicago Bears come into Sunday’s matchup at 8-7 and coming off a demoralizing 54-11 loss to Philadelphia. Chicago had their chance to cash in and clinch the NFC North, yet failed miserably. Jay Cutler was ineffective in his second game. Cutler went 20 for 35 for 22 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception, while being sacked 5 times. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery leads the team in receiving yards with 1341; while Brandon Marshall is not far behind with 1221. Marshall and Jeffery together from the most dangerous wide receiver tandems in the league Running back Matt Forte is having a good season as well, rushing for 1229 yards along with 547 receiving yards. The defense continues to struggle, as was evident last Sunday. Chicago ranks 29th in the league in total defense, and their run defense is the worst in the league. Not only are they the worst allowing 161 yards on the ground per game, but the 31st ranked rushing defense is allowing 135.9 per game. The Bears are also giving up 29.7 points per game, ranking near the bottom of the league.

The Green Bay Packers have been hit with some injuries this year at key positions, but they got some good news this week. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will make his return after missing the previous 7 games due to a collarbone injury. The Packers have been pretty resilient as of late, winning 2 out of their last 3 games. One game that might define their season was in week 15 at Dallas, rallying from 23 points down to defeat the Cowboys in their own building 37-26. Rookie running back Eddie Lacy has been outstanding, with 1112 yards this season. In the past three weeks, Lacy has rushed for 290 yards and 4 touchdowns while averaging 5.17 yards per carry. Lacy is questionable for Sunday, so his status should be monitored. The wide receiving corps will be happy to see Rodgers back with Jordy Nelson leading the way 1153 yards this season. Defensively, the Packers rank 26th in the league, allowing 389.3 yards per game, and allow 248.8 yards passing per game. The defense will be weakened this Sunday, as Clay Matthews has been ruled out on Sunday.

Jay Cutler is 1-8 lifetime against Green Bay, while Aaron Rodgers is 9-3 vs. Chicago. I would really like to take the points in this one, but I can’t trust Jay Cutler. It was highly debated that Chicago coach Marc Trestman should have stuck with the hot hand in Josh McCown. Aaron Rodgers might be a bit rusty, but with a running game consisting of Eddie Lacy and James Starks, I expect him to be effective. Rodgers was injured in the last meeting against Chicago, so I’d have to imagine he’d like to stick it to Chicago once again. It seems that Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers has Jay Cutler’s number. Since 2011 against Green Bay, Cutler has completed just 51% of his passes for 563 yards with 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. I expect a couple of Chicago mistakes to be the difference, and Green Bay to get the win at Soldier Field.
