Wednesday NBA Playoff Analysis: The Oklahoma City Thunder will try to avoid a 0-2 deficit when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers in game 2 of the Western Conference semifinal series.

The Los Angeles Clippers really took it to Thunder in game 1 of their series on Monday. The Clippers held a 39-25 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 122-105 victory. Chris Paul connected on 8 of 9 three point attempts and finished the night with 32 points and 10 assists. Blake Griffin chipped in with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists yet struggled from the field somewhat shooting 7 of 16. Jamal Crawford was also a factor off the bench scoring 17 points. For the Thunder, the team actually shot a decent 45.9% from the field with Russell Westbrook leading the team with 29 points and Kevin Durant adding 25. The team was sloppy on the offensive end though, with 17 turnovers compared to just 8 by the Clippers. The Thunder also struggled on the defensive end allowing the Clippers to shoot 54.9% from the field and 51% from beyond the arc.

The problem I’ve had with this Oklahoma City team during this year’s playoffs is that there never is a third guy that steps up on a consistent basis. I was actually on Los Angeles in game 1; reason being is that even though both teams went to game 7 in the first round, the Thunder really had their backs to the wall. They were down 3-2 and had to win on the road to avoid being eliminated. I also think that Memphis was a much tougher opponent than Golden State. They were more physical, and their defense really made the Thunder work for every shot. I expected the Thunder to be a little flat, and they were. Now its game 2 and I’m backing the Thunder tonight. Los Angeles had the whole Donald Sterling situation happen, and then won a 7 game series against Golden State. Now they are coming off a big win in game 1, I can see them taking a deep breath and not coming out with the same intensity tonight. I also expect Oklahoma City to really turn it up on the defensive end tonight, as I do think they are the better defensive team of the two. I can’t see Chris Paul going 8 of 9 from beyond the arc either, as that’s pretty rare to say the least. I’m also not concerned about another player stepping up for the Thunder tonight, because I think they all will. If you saw Kevin Durant’s MVP acceptance speech, you not only saw what kind of a class act he is, but how much he appreciates his teammates. He gave nothing but props to his team, and in turn I think it’s going to light a fire under them. The Thunder can’t afford to go down 0-2, and I think you’ll see a sense of urgency tonight, similar to the performance in game 7 against Memphis. Taking the points looks tempting in this one, but I do believe we’ll get a stellar effort from Oklahoma City tonight.
