Thursday NBA analysis: The Miami Heat travel to San Antonio to take on the Spurs for the second time this season.

Back in January a lot of so-called experts were writing off the San Antonio Spurs. Too old, too many injuries, they just can’t compete with the younger teams. Well, fast forward to March and this team is now getting healthier and have won 8 of their last 10 games and are now a game and a half out of 1st in the Western conference behind Oklahoma City. Kawhi Leonard and Tiago Splitter have returned, Tony Parker is somewhat healthy, and their bench is putting in quality minutes as well. The Spurs are averaging 104.3 ppg while shooting 48.8% from the field. They are extremely efficient on the offensive end and do a great job with ball movement. Defensively they are allowing 98 ppg and are limiting opponents to 44.8% shooting from the field.

The Miami Heat have been on a tear as of late, but had their 8 game win streak snapped Tuesday night, losing at Houston 106-103. The night before, LeBron James exploded for 61 points in a 124-107 victory at home against Charlotte. Like the Spurs, the Heat has also won 8 out of their last 10 games, and have really stepped it up since the All-Star break. Miami is averaging 104.7 ppg while shooting a league leading 51.1% from the field. Defensively they are allowing 98.4 ppg while allowing opponents to shoot 45.6% from the field.

In the game against Houston, LeBron James had stated that the team was somewhat tired. Well actually you can take a look at Miami’s recent schedule and see that they’ve had a pretty big stretch of games. That loss against Houston was their third game in four nights. Now tonight, they have a well-rested San Antonio squad that will be looking to make a bit of a statement. Also, it will be Miami’s third game in four nights and fourth game in 6 nights. Miami has already made their statement against San Antonio beating them by 12 back in late January. I don’t see where there will be supreme focus as far as the Heat is concerned; and that’s why I’m going to lay the points with San Antonio tonight. The Spurs are clicking on all cylinders right now, and I think the oddsmakers are depending on the public backing the road dog, as the Heat have been playing well as of late. Tonight is a big step up in competition for Miami, and while I do think these teams are evenly matched, the Spurs are quietly playing a very good brand of basketball. The Spurs win in convincing fashion tonight.
