Justin Verlander TigersDetroit Tigers vs. Oakland Athletics Game 5 MLB Pick: Some of the best in baseball have struggled in situations like this. Game 5 of the ALDS takes place on Thursday night, and either the Detroit Tigers or the Oakland Athletics will see their season come to a close after nine innings (maybe more!). It’s winner goes on and loser goes home, and this clash couldn’t possibly be any bigger.

In spite of the fact that the A’s were beaten in this very same spot last season, they are still fighting right in there this year at -102 on the ALDS Game 5 odds. The ‘total’ is low at 6.5, and after these two men dueled to a 1-0 game just five days ago, who can blame the oddsmakers for making a number so low?

Sometimes, you just have to go with your gut. We’re absolutely sure that somewhere, sharp bettors are putting gobs of money on the Athletics, and they might be right more often than not. In this case though, we have far too much overwhelming evidence that the Tigers are going to win this game that we have to go with it, as we would kick ourselves if we didn’t. The situation might literally be as perfect as could be.

The Tigers woke up their bats offensively at just the right time. They scored more runs in the last five innings of Game 4 than they did in the rest of the series combined, and they are arriving right on cue to help their ace become a hero. RHP Justin Verlander might be the man that we want most to pitch a Game 5 like this one, as he has proven time and time again that he can win these outings and dominate them. Rookie RHP Sonny Gray is the man that is going against Verlander, and he has no idea what it is like to pitch in a spot like this. The situation is just too perfect. Detroit won this series last year right on this field, and Verlander was the only man that touched the mound on that day for the visitors. If we learned nothing from yesterday’s NLDS series-clinching win for the St. Louis Cardinals, it’s that you don’t take a young team with a rookie pitcher and send that combo up against a veteran team and one of the best 10 pitchers in all of baseball. Detroit almost has to win this game, just out of necessity.
