Koji Uehara Red SoxBoston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday Free MLB Pick: If the postseason were to start today, the Tampa Bay Rays would essentially have a 50/50 shot of having to deal with the Boston Red Sox in the opening round of the playoffs. These two teams are going to be meeting on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, as the Sox look to continue to put their foot on the gas pedal and remove any hopes that the Rays have of making a miraculous comeback in the AL East.

We really like what the Red Sox are bringing to the table in this game. They have an offense which is averaging 5.20 runs per game and OPSing nearly .800 as a club, and the team is batting just shy of .280 for the season. Boston just set the record last week for the most runs ever scored in a three-game stretch and the most runs that it ever scored in a four-game stretch in team history, and it has a bullpen which is anchored by RHP Koji Uehara, who hasn’t allowed a base runner in nine straight outings. Tampa Bay meanwhile, is 3-12 in its last 15 games, it isn’t producing all that much in the way of runs, and the confidence that the club has just can’t be all that high at the moment. Notice that we haven’t even spoken of the starting pitchers yet in this game? We recognize that Tampa Bay has the better of the two starters in RHP Alex Cobb, and in fact, we absolutely despise RHP Ryan Dempster, but our hatred of Dempster doesn’t exceed our love for the Red Sox at the moment. Go with Boston to best the Rays as an underdog, a situation that it shouldn’t be in on the MLB betting odds for the time being.
