Red Sox vs. RaysTampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox Game 1 MLB Pick: Two of the budding rivals in the AL East are going to be facing off in the postseason for the second time in the last five years. Game 1 of the ALDS between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox kicks off on Friday afternoon from Fenway Park in what could be a brutal series between two teams that really don’t like each other.

Tampa Bay has been the hot team, winning back to back elimination games in convincing fashion. Now, the team is a +126 underdog on the MLB playoff odds if it wants to take a 1-0 series lead and immediately steal home field advantage.

What really made the Red Sox the better of these two teams this year was their lineup. This is a team that averaged over five runs per game, and it didn’t seem to matter who anyone threw out there on the mound, there were always runs to be had. However, if you look at the splits between these teams when it is just associated to left-handed pitching, you’ll see that things aren’t all that far apart. The Red Sox bat .261 against lefties and are averaging 4.77 runs per nine innings. The Rays bat .263 against lefties with an average of 4.65 runs per game.

Alas, the question now comes up which one of these teams has the better lefty on the mound on Friday. The answer in our eyes is Tampa Bay. LHP Matt Moore went 17-4 this season with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He wasn’t good down the stretch of the season, but Moore was consistent all year long, and we have no reason to believe that he isn’t going to come up with the goods on Friday. LHP Jon Lester meanwhile, was the hotter pitcher down the stretch, but he went 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA, numbers which are just a tad bit worse than those of Moore. Look back at what Boston did this year against the lefties of the Rays. It scored just a total of four runs in three games with LHP David Price on the mound in the last two months of the season, and the numbers don’t get much better than that against a lot of the other top southpaws in the game as well. Moore could pitch a third straight gem to get his team in a position to take a commanding lead in this series by the end of the weekend.
