The Cardinals know the importance of finishing this series off to get guys like 3B David Freese a few more days off to heal injuries before going into the World Series with nothing to worry about. RHP Joe Kelly is going to be tasked to take down this pivotal win, and he’ll be dealing against RHP Zack Greinke on Wednesday. On one blush, it seems that the combination of having a better pitcher on the mound and having the home field advantage should be enough for the Dodgers, but we just don’t think that this LA team has enough grit in it to want to fight back from down 3-1 to win this series. Regardless, this is likely the last home game of the year, and it’s not even like the team can really rest its laurels on the fact that it was able to win a game at Busch Stadium. Remember, falling behind 0-2 on the road, the first game of which came with Kelly on the mound, is what created this mess in the first place.

Greinke was great in Game 1, lasting eight innings and striking out 10 guys before coming out of the game, and he allowed just two runs. His bullpen couldn’t go out for out with the Cardinals’ bullpen though, and Kelly, though only lasting six innings instead of eight, pitched every bit as good of a game as Greinke did. That’s the formula here for St. Louis. Keep this game close going into the latter innings and let one of your clutch bats come up with the magical moment to send this team to the World Series. Manager Mike Matheny literally went through the entire bullpen to finish off Game 1 of this series, as he used five relievers and then had to turn to RHP Lance Lynn to finish the job in extra innings, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he did the same thing again. This pen for St. Louis has been remarkable in the postseason, and between that and the hit that is bound to come from someone up and down this lineup, we think that there is going to be a wild celebration on the mound at the end of this one involving the guys dressed in red and white.
