The Texas Rangers open up a 4 game series with the Seattle Mariners on Monday night from Globe Life Park in Arlington. The Rangers come in to Monday night’s contest going .500 in their last 6 games, losing 2 out of 3 in Boston, and taking 2 out of 3 against Houston. The Mariners have lost 3 out of their last 5, and lost 2 out of 3 at home against Oakland, where they struggled to get runs in their past two games.

Cuban defector Roenis Elias will take the hill for the Mariners, while Colby Lewis will make his first major league start in almost two years for the Rangers. Lewis has been out of action due to hip and elbow surgeries, his last start was in July of 2012 against Oakland. Reports out of the Rangers organization are that there will be no limitations with Lewis, who pitched 5 innings surrendering 3 runs in a Triple-A start back on April 6th. Elias has been pretty good thus far in his 2014 campaign, yet has yet to go more than 5 innings in his 2 starts. He’s 0-1 this season with a 2.70 ERA with 5 strikeouts this season and a 1.00 WHIP. The Rangers have been plagued by injuries early this season. Starters Joe Saunders and Derek Holland are currently on the disabled list, as well as second baseman Jurickson Profar and their most recent addition to the DL, third baseman Adrian Beltre.

I’m seeing some value with the Mariners, and I think they are a real live dog tonight. Texas has been pretty inconsistent as far as run production this season. In 4 of their last 6 games, the Rangers have failed to score more than 2 runs. The Rangers will be seeing Roenis Elias for the first time, and we all know that pitchers have the advantage the first time around. The Mariners struggled to score runs in their last two games, but the pitchers they were facing were some pretty good ones in Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir. I’d have to think Lewis’s stuff isn’t going to blow the Mariners away, and I think Seattle can get some runs tonight. Seattle first baseman Justin Smoak has to be pretty pumped to face Lewis, as he is 4 for 7 with 3 extra base hits lifetime against him. I’ll take the Mariners tonight, as I think it might be a long night for Lewis, who will be facing a potent lineup full of left-handed bats.
