The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates take the field on Tuesday night for the second game of a three game series.

Gerrit Cole and Mike Leake are the particulars in Tuesday’s NL East showdown. The two teams were deadlocked in a 7-7 tie last night when play was suspended due to rain. The contest will be resumed this evening at 5:30 in the top of the seventh inning. It will be interesting to see how the managers utilize their bullpens in the last 3 innings, and how that will impact the evening game. Leake is currently 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA and an impressive 0.89 WHIP. His last time out on the mound was an impressive showing, going 8 strong innings allowing only 4 hits resulting in a 4-0 win over St. Louis. Right-hander Gerrit Cole stormed on the scene last year and was an important part of the Pirates’ run to the postseason. He is currently 2-0 with a 3.46 ERA with 13 K’s and a WHIP of 1.15. His last appearance was less than impressive, giving up 3 earned runs off 5 hits and two walks in a 5-4 victory over the Cubs.

Like last nights Mariners vs. Rangers contest, we have somewhat of a similar situation in Cincinnati tonight. I don’t think we’ll be seeing 10 home runs like we did in the first 6 innings of last nights contest, but I am backing the Pirates tonight. Even though Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are in the same division, the Reds haven’t seen Gerrit Cole before. The Pirates on the other hand, are quite familiar with Mike Leake, as they have a .287 average against him with 7 home runs. Second baseman Neil Walker made his presence felt last night with 2 home runs, and against Leake is batting .321 with 1 HR and 11 RBI’s, along with a slugging percentage of .571. Russell Martin has also had success against Leake in the past, with a lifetime average of .474 and a .684 slugging percentage. If the bullpens are needed in this game, I’d have to give the advantage to Pittsburgh also, as they own an ERA of 2.48 and a BAA of .215, while the Reds bullpen has struggled with a 5.20 ERA and a BAA of .229. I’m backing the Pirates tonight, as I believe they have the advantage with the starting pitching, and have the far superior bullpen which could be a very big factor.
