Week 1’s College Football Game of the Week
Georgia Bulldogs (-2) vs. Clemson Tigers
The Bulldogs and the Tigers are both ranked in the Top 10 in the country, and the winner of this one is certainly going to have a feather in their cap when it comes to handicapping the race on the odds to win the National Championship. This game means so much more than just a national title picture, though. It’s a game of respect for sure. Can the ACC’s best beat one of the SEC’s best? Georgia might ultimately be even as low as the fifth best team in the SEC this year, and if the Bulldogs can knock off Clemson, one of the easy favorites to win the conference, what chance does that give the rest of the nation of knocking off teams like Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida, LSU… On top of that, both Tajh Boyd and Aaron Murray are superstars in their own right, and both experienced vets are legit Heisman Trophy contenders as well. The winner of this game might become the early favorite to knock Johnny Manziel off of his pedestal.

Week 1’s Biggest Mismatch
Wisconsin Badgers (-44.5) vs. Massachusetts Minutemen
Is there any reason for this game to even be remotely close? Wisconsin is clearly just paying for a great crowd at Camp Randall Stadium and an easy blowout. The Minutemen are years and years away from having the resources to compete even in the MAC, let alone against one of the better teams in the Big Ten, and this should be an easy one for the Badgers. They are one of the five teams favored by at least 30 this week, though.

Week 1’s Highest Total
Georgia Bulldogs vs. Clemson Tigers (72.5)
And why not? With the way that Boyd and Murray sling the ball all over the field, there is a real chance for this to be a game full of fireworks right from the get go. Normally, it wouldn’t be shocking if there was some sloppy offense early on in the year, but we don’t see how Boyd and Murray are going to let their experienced offenses falter, especially with so many members on both sides of the ball coming back from last year’s explosive teams.

Week 1’s Lowest Total
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (45.5)
Surprisingly, there isn’t a game on the docket in the low-40s this week, though there will be plenty of games that surely end up there when push comes to shove. Alabama just doesn’t allow points to anyone whatsoever, and with six coming back from last season’s defense and plenty more future NFLers waiting in the wings, there is no way that Virginia Tech gets anywhere near 20 in this game. That puts the onus on the Alabama offense, which is efficient in its own right. The problem with playing the ‘over’ in this game? What happens if the Tide post a shutout? It’s very plausible, and they aren’t going to score 45 all on their own in all likelihood.
