Updated 10/5/13: What a very interesting time that we have right now in college football. We aren’t even halfway through the season yet, and we have already seen names shuffle all over the place, and we very well could be seeing some things that we have never seen before on the Heisman Trophy odds. Amongst the top 15 contenders or so, we have a man who was suspended by his team for a half of a game (Johnny Manziel +750), a man who was a redshirt freshman who had never suited up in a game before this year (Jameis Winston +1200), a man who missed the better part of three games injured (Braxton Miller +2000), a man who didn’t even win the starting quarterback job out of camp (Blake Bell +2500), and a man who no one had ever heard of, and most probably still have never heard of (Bryce Petty +2500).
That said, none of these men are likely to really end up winning the Heisman Trophy, as at least at this point in our eyes, we would be willing to bet that amongst the finalists will be Clemson’s Tajh Boyd (+1000), Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater (+500) and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (+160). We’re not all that convinced that this is going to be the order in which these players finish necessarily, but it does seem that these are the three best players in the nation that deserve to be honored. The numbers that Mariota is putting up with the Ducks are insane, and in all likelihood, all three of these men are going to be playing for teams that are undefeated into November. All three are just going to need that “Heisman moment,” and that’s the only thing that is going to be lacking for Bridgewater. Mariota has a shot to do it against a great Stanford defense. Boyd already has a bit of a Heisman moment from when he ripped apart the Georgia defense, but he can do it against versus Florida State and South Carolina.
There are others like Aaron Murray (+1400) and AJ McCarron (+1000) that we perhaps haven’t heard the last of yet, and Jameis Winston (+1200) remains a bit of a Wild Card as well, but these are men that we think need some help, and not just their own stellar play, to get to the Big Apple as Heisman Trophy finalists.
