Florida State and MiamiThe #3 ranked Florida State Seminoles host the #7 ranked Miami Hurricanes in an ACC conference battle with huge BCS implications. What’s more shocking to most is that there’s a conference game that has BCS implications and it doesn’t involve an SEC team.

Florida State has been just flat out dominating this year. Freshman. Jameis Winston has been spectacular, and is the Heisman trophy front-runner. Everyone in the nation knew they were a contender, but when they beat down the Clemson Tigers 51-14, everyone knew this team was for real. Winston has completed close to 70% of his passes for 2177 yards with 23 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. Their offensive attack is explosive and can score from anywhere on the field. The Seminoles rank fourth in the nation in total offense (553 ypg) and third in the nation in scoring (52.6). The defense has been just as impressive, ranking first in the nation in pass defense (153.7 ypg) and eighth in total defense (289.4 ypg) while allowing an average of 13 points a game, ranking fourth in the country in that category.

The Miami Hurricanes come in to Tallahassee undefeated at 7-0. The Hurricanes had an impressive start to the season, as in their 2nd game they beat then #12 ranked Florida. Since then they haven’t been all that impressive. In their past 2 games, they needed last minute scores against North Carolina and Wake Forest. The Hurricanes have shown that they have a very leaky pass defense. Against Florida, who has one of the weaker passing offenses, the Hurricanes allowed Jeff Driskel to pass for almost 300 yards. We all know now that Florida is one of the biggest disappointments this year. The Canes also gave up over 300 yards to Wake Forest, and North Carolina. Miami’s offense has been good, but at times has been inconsistent, lead by quarterback Stephen Morris, and explosive running back Duke Johnson. Miami’s offense is well balanced, averaging 214 yards a game on the ground, and 270 through the air.

This is without a doubt the biggest game in the Miami-Florida St. Rivalry for quite some time. When looking at this matchup, you have to look at the inconsistency of Miami, and the utter dominance of Florida St. Last year, the Noles topped the Hurricanes in Miami 33-20, and that was without Jameis Winston. Florida State has a habit in years past of not showing up consistently week in and week out. Well, it’s a different story in 2013, they went into Clemson and dominated, then avoided the usual letdown with a 49-17 win against N.C. State. This would lead me to believe that this is a different Seminole team compared to prior years, and it’s due in part to short term focus.

This is a lot of points to be laying for a rivalry game, and if it wasn’t for Miami’s prior performances, I’d be inclined to lean Miami here. But I believe that Jameis Winston will have a field day on Saturday night. Miami is a good team, but just look at the games this year and ask yourself if they really belong in the top 10. You might look to the win that Miami had against a respectable Florida Gator team. Well, all you have to do is look at the stats in that game and it’s very telling. The Gators outgained Miami 413-212 in that game. The only reason Miami won that game was turnovers. The undisciplined Gator offense had 6 turnovers that game, they basically gave the game away. Florida State rarely turns the ball over, and even though Miami might have a punchers chance in this one, I just don’t see it working out for Miami. You also have to keep in mind that Florida State was passed up by Oregon in the BCS standings, so they will be motivated to once again make a statement on the national stage.
