Florida State and MiamiThe 8-1 Ball State Cardinals play host to the Central Michigan Chippewas in a Mid-American Conference West division clash.
Ball St has definitely been the class of the MAC this year. Winners of 6 straight, they are 8-1 overall while going undefeated in conference play at 5-0.

They’ve had some impressive victories this year, winning by 21 at Virginia, and downing an explosive Toledo Rocket squad by 7. Their only loss this year was by 7 at North Texas, one of the top teams in Conference USA. The Cardinals have a potent aerial attack, led by senior quarterback Keith Wenning. Wenning has passed for 2865 yards this year for 23 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. The one benefiting from most from Wenning is junior wide receiver Willie Snead, who already has over 1000 yards on the year. The Ball State defense is average, allowing a disturbing 206 yards on the ground per game. The secondary is one of the better ones in the MAC, only allowing 215 yards per game through the air.

It’s been somewhat a frustrating season for Central Michigan at 3-5, yet they have managed a few impressive wins as of late. The Chippewas won at winless Miami of Ohio a month ago, and then followed it up with an impressive win at Ohio. In that game at Athens, the stats were pretty much identical, yet Ohio turned the ball over 4 times. Turnovers have been a problem for the Chippewas this year. Freshman quarterback Cooper Rush has thrown 11 touchdowns this year, but has tossed 10 interceptions. Their offense as a whole does struggle, managing just 340 yards per game. The Chippewa defense is pedestrian at best giving up an average of 436 yards per game.

This matchup is interesting, as both teams have had extra time to prepare. The fact that the Chippewas won two straight on the road is a telling sign that this squad really wants to salvage their season. Last year, the Chippewas only lost by 11 at home to Ball State although they were playing catch up for most of the game. This is actually a bad spot for Ball State, as next week they are playing at Northern Illinois, in a pivotal contest that will more than likely determine who represents the West in the MAC championship game. It’s always good to back a hungry team looking for the upset against a team that will more than likely be looking ahead and lacking focus.
