Saturday NCAA analysis: The #2 ranked Florida State Seminoles will look to keep their path clear to the BCS Championship as they take on the Florida Gators from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

It’s been a year to forget for the Gators, as they come into this matchup with a 4-7 record.   The Gators have lost 5 straight, and in a culmination of their futility, lost last week 26-20 to Georgia Southern. What’s more disturbing is that Georgia Southern did not complete a pass the entire game, and ran for 429 yards. It was the worst loss in school history for Florida, and their first ever loss to an FCS team. Their defense is actually respectable, giving up only 19.6 points per game. However their offense has been lacking, averaging just 19.9 yards per game. They average just 176 yards through the air, and 151.9 yards on the ground per game.

Florida State has been truly dominant this year. They’re not just beating teams; they’re winning by more than a convincing margin. The Seminoles made their statement winning at Clemson 51-14, and haven’t looked back since. There’s been no letdown, no trap game, none of that winning all 11 of their games by an average of 43.8 points. The Seminole offense is explosive, averaging 320 passing yards, 211 rushing yards, and 55 points per game. They are led by freshman quarterback Jameis Winston, who has completed 69.6% of his passes for 3163 yards with 32 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Winston has been in the spotlight recently for his involvement in a sexual assault case, yet it hasn’t been a distraction as they just continue to maul the opposition. The backfield features 3 outstanding running backs, in Devonta Freeman (808 yds 11 TD), Karlos Williams (636 yds 10 TD), and James Wilder Jr. (454 yds 8 TD). Florida State’s defense has been just as impressive, ranking second in scoring defense allowing only 11.4 points per game. Their defense creates havoc for opposing quarterbacks, with 30 sacks and 23 interceptions, 5 of which have been returned for touchdowns.

Anyone could make a case for the home underdog Gators here, as they are an in state rival playing their last game of the season and would like to go out on a positive note. It won’t happen on Saturday, as Florida State has demonstrated extreme focus week after week. After a demoralizing defeat last Saturday, you have to wonder what the mindset is of this Florida squad. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Florida put up a fight at first and be somewhat competitive, but Florida State will pull away as the game goes on as Florida simply doesn’t have the offense to keep up. They have Winston making his last case for the Heisman, and they have to be impressive to voters, as they have an undefeated Ohio State team right behind them in the rankings. You can make a case for all the emotions that a rivalry game brings, but at the end of the day these are two programs heading in opposite directions.
