Saturday NCAA analysis: The 0-11 Hawaii Warriors will get one more crack at getting into the win column as they host the 3-7 Army Black Knights.

Hawaii comes into Saturday’s matchup winless, yet judging by the last couple of games, they aren’t giving up by any stretch. Last Saturday they took a respectable Wyoming squad to overtime losing 59-56. The week before that they took a 7-4 San Diego State team to overtime as well, losing 28-21. When you look at a winless team, you automatically assume they’re not competitive. It’s hard to say this with a straight face, but Hawaii is truly better than their record would indicate. Not only have they battled the last 2 weeks, but they outgained Colorado State in yardage, yet due to turnovers lost by 7. They only lost by 5 to an undefeated Fresno State team, coming back from a 32 point deficit to score 27 unanswered. The Warriors are led by senior quarterback Sean Schroeder, who’s had a decent year in the Mountain West. Schroeder has completed 61.2% of his passes for 2638 yards with 25 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Hawaii ranks 19th in the country in passing with 299 yards per game. Defensively they struggle, allowing 502 yards and 38.5 points per game.

Army comes to Hawaii at 3-7, and coming off of a 21-17 home loss to Western Kentucky. The Black Knights have the nation’s top ranked rushing attack, averaging 330.6 yards per game. Their triple option offense is led by junior quarterback Angel Santiago. Santiago has 512 yards passing and 530 yards rushing on the season. The two main backs in the backfield are juniors Terry Baggett (991 yds 8 TD) and Larry Dixon (672 yds 6 TD). The defense for Army allows an average of 396 yards per game, allowing an average of 6.58 yards per play. They are solid against the pass, allowing only 203 yards per contest.

When looking at this game on paper, you would think that Army would have no trouble disposing of the Warriors. However, the situation would tell you otherwise. Hawaii will be trying to avoid their first losing season since 1998. Army won’t be going to a bowl game this year, and has the annual Army-Navy game next on their schedule. You would have to question the motivation for the Golden Knights, as their big game is two weeks away. Hawaii has been competitive lately and will be bringing maximum focus and motivation, as the seniors won’t want their last game to be a losing one.
