Friday NCAA analysis: The 6–3 Washington Huskies travel to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California to take on the 7-2 #13 UCLA Bruins in a pivotal PAC-12 matchup.ucla football It’s been a pretty good season for the Bruins, who currently stand at 7–2 and are in second place in the PAC-12 South division. They are coming off a 31–26 victory at Arizona and are looking to win out, where they may have a chance to play in the PAC-12 championship. The Bruin offense is led by quarterback Brett Hundley, who is having a stellar year. Hundley is a dual threat quarterback that has completed 68.5% of his passes for 2225 yards with 18 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Hundley also leads the team in rushing with a 4.3 average per carry with 487 yards. Running back Jordon James has been bothered by an ankle injury for the majority of the season; however UCLA unveiled another threat in the backfield last week which created quite a buzz. Freshman Myles Jack, who plays linebacker on a regular basis, was installed in the backfield against Arizona and rushed for 120 yards on six carries. The Bruins have a balanced offense of attack averaging 263.8 yards through the air, and 199.8 yards on the ground per game. UCLA’s defense has been average this year as they rank 63rd in the nation giving up 391 yards per game and giving up an average of 5.03 yards per play. It’s been a somewhat disappointing season for Washington, after a strong start the Huskies lost three in a row, two of which were on the road. After the losing streak they righted the ship against California and then coasted to an easy 52 point when at home against Colorado last week. The offense is led by quarterback Keith Price, who has been impressive this year. Price has passed for 2481 yards with a 65.4 completion percentage, with 18 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. The Husky backfield features one of the top running backs in the country, Bishop Sankey, who has rushed for 1305 yards and 13 touchdowns. The offense as a whole is averaging 37.2 points per game and 515.9 yards per game. Washington’s pass defense is pretty respectable only 209.7 yards per game through the air. When looking at this matchup you see that UCLA does have the better record, and definitely has the advantage with the home crowd behind them. But if you look inside the numbers, Washington with their three losses is actually the better team. So, let’s take a look at that three game losing streak… They played at Stanford, and fought tooth and nail with the Cardinal. Washington actually dominated Stanford from a yard comparison out gaining them by more than 200 yards. After playing that physical Stanford team they had to take on the fast paced Oregon Ducks. After losing to the Ducks they then had to travel to the desert to take on the high-powered offense of Arizona State, where they were gassed by the end of the first quarter. That was a significantly bad scheduling spot for the Huskies and they are in fact better than their record would indicate. The oddsmakers apparently think that as well as they are only a 2 1/2 point road underdog to a 7–2 UCLA squad. If you look at these two teams and look at the games between their common opponents Washington has fared much better against those teams. I think Washington will have success running that ball on UCLA, and I do think UCLA will have a somewhat difficult time moving the ball as Washington has a lot of speed on defense. The Huskies have the better offense, the better defense, and it will come to fruition on Friday as I think they get the win in the Rose Bowl.
