Saturday NCAA Football Free Picks & Georgia/Auburn Analysis: The marquee matchup in the SEC will be the ‘Deep South’s oldest rivalry’ as #25 Georgia faces #7 Auburn at Jordan–Hare Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogsstadium in Auburn, Alabama.

When considering who should be coach of the year in college football this year Gus Malzahn should be at the top of the list. The Auburn Tigers have without a doubt been the SEC’s most improved team this year. The Tigers have one of the top rushing attacks in the country and definitely in the SEC averaging 320 yards per game. Auburn is coming off an impressive 55–23 win at Tennessee, as quarterback Nick Marshall ran for 214 yards. Auburn’s only lost this year was at LSU losing 35–21. They are currently on a six game win streak with impressive wins against Mississippi and at Texas A&M. The defense for Auburn can be scored upon. The Tiger defense surrenders 394.4 yards per game, with 155.6 of those yards on the ground, and is giving up an average of 5.52 yards per play. Most of their games against the top teams in the SEC have been shootouts.

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Georgia’s season has been done in by injuries. This team is however getting healthier. Todd Gurley made his presence felt when he returned back from injury to burn Florida for 100 yards on the ground and 87 receiving yards. The fact that they are 6-3 with so many injuries this year can speak for the leadership of senior quarterback Aaron Murray. He’s completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2477 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. The Bulldogs leading wide receiver Chris Conley should also be active for the game Saturday, as he sat out last week with a sprained ankle. The Bulldogs have one of the best run defenses in the SEC, giving up only 126 yards on the ground per game.

The Auburn Tigers have been impressive this year, but this is a bad spot for the Tigers. There’s either one of two things on their mind, getting revenge for the 38-0 defeat to Georgia last year, or playing Alabama in the ‘Iron Bowl’ their next game. The Georgia run defense will be the best run defense the Tigers have faced all season, and if they are forced in to third and long situations, it might not be a favorable outcome. Nick Marshall has an average of only 17.7 pass attempts per game, and I could see the Georgia defense forcing mistakes. Georgia will score, as Auburn’s defense has given up a lot of points to some of the better offenses in the SEC. I’m expecting a tight ball game here, and I think Georgia’s offense and the big game experience of Aaron Murray will be the difference in a high scoring shootout.
