Florida State and MiamiIt’s the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party as the Georgia Bulldogs face the Florida Gators in an SEC clash. If you’re a fan of either of these two teams, I think it’s safe to say that you’ve had your fair share of cocktails. It’s been a disappointing season for both programs as BCS title hopes were ruined early on.

The Florida Gators come in to this week 10 matchup at 4-3, following a rough two game losing streak. Their BCS hopes were dashed in week 2, as turnovers killed them in a 21-16 loss at Miami. For the Gators, it’s pretty much the same story as last year…good defense, inept offense. Their other two losses are at the hands of LSU and Missouri. The loss to Missouri was a really tough scheduling spot for the Gators, as they had just traveled to LSU the previous week. The Gators lost starting quarterback in a week 4 win against Tennessee. His replacement Tyler Wilson, hasn’t been bad. Some would argue he’s better than Jeff Driskel because he’s mobile. The ground game is the strength of their offensive attack, averaging 161 yards a game. Florida’s defense keeps them in ball games. The Gators might get two defensive starters back this week, in defensive tackle Damien Jacobs and outside linebacker Ronald Powell, which should provide a boost. Florida ranks third in the nation in passing efficiency defense, and also second in the nation in 3rd down conversion percentage.

Georgia comes in to Jacksonville with an identical 4-3 record and like Florida, on a 2 game skid. If there has been a main story for Georgia, it’s injuries. They are beat up offensively, plain and simple. They are probably getting star running back Todd Gurley back this week, which should help significantly. Aaron Murray’s reliable targets, Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott Wesley, are out for the year. Chris Conley and Michael Bennett have also missed time. This has significantly hurt the passing game, as Murray has not thrown for over 300 yards in his past four games. In fact, Murray only passed for 114 yards against Vanderbilt. Georgia’s defense has been pedestrian this year, allowing a whopping 33.3 points per game.

When looking at this game, I see one thing as a factor. Revenge…I do think the revenge factor can be overused when analyzing SEC rivalries, but in this case, where both teams are 4-3, I think it is warranted.

Florida came into this game last year undefeated, and the Bulldogs knocked them out of BCS championship contention. This year, Georgia’s offense is hurting, and even with Gurley back, I simply think Florida has the advantage on both sides of the ball. My sense is that Florida head coach Will Muschamp will employ a safe, ball control game plan, and will have a few tricks up his sleeve. Georgia has won the last two in this series, but this year I think the Gators pull it out in a close one.
