Tuesday Hawaii Bowl Picks & Analysis: The Oregon Statehawaiibowl_logo Beavers take on the Boise State Broncos in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Oregon State Beavers (6-6) come into Tuesday’s bowl game losers of five games in a row, losing their last outing 36-35 in the Civil War against in state rival Oregon. The Beavers season started out on a sour note as they were upset at home by Eastern Washington 49–46. The Beavers had seemed to turn their season around winning six straight after that upset loss. However they have lost the last five games against the likes of Stanford, USC, Arizona State, Washington, and Oregon. There’s one thing about all five of those losses, all of those teams are either currently ranked in the top 25 or were ranked at some point in the season. Also if you look into the numbers, they were competitive in three of those losses.  Against Arizona State and Stanford, they outgained their opponent in yardage, and only lost by 1 point against Oregon. Their offense is led by quarterback Sean Mannion, who was third in the FBS this year in passing yards with 4403 yards. They are primarily a passing offense, as they average only 86 yards rushing per game. The defense is been a problem this year, allowing 428.2 yards and 32.1 points per game, while allowing  6.10 yards per play.

Boise State (8-4) will be looking to capture their fifth straight postseason win, but will be doing so without Chris Pederson.  Their now former head coach left the program to take the head coaching position at Washington. The team will be coached by assistant Bob Gregory. There’s another story that surfaced this past weekend as starting quarterback Joe Southwick was sent home for violating team rules. Both Southwick and backup Nick Patti were suspended from practice Friday for violating team rules. Interim head coach Bob Gregory said that Southwick was sent home for his violation and that Patti was reinstated for practice and the bowl game. Junior Grant Hedrick is expected to get the start, in 12 games this season, he completed 135 of 198 passes for 1,443 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Boise offense is well balanced, averaging 38.8 points, 269 yards passing, and 201.8 yards rushing per game this season. The defense has been respectable, allowing 410 yards and 23.8 points per game, while allowing 5.15 yards per play.

With these two offenses, I expect a lot of points in this one. Beaver quarterback will be facing a Boise State pass defense that is ranked 91st in the FBS allowing 11 yards per completion, so he could be in line for a big day. Oregon State’s defense is facing a pretty good rushing attack, led by Boise State running back Jay Ajayi, who has rushed for 1328 yards and is averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Even though I’d like to take the points here, the distractions with Chris Pederson leaving and the Joe Southwick suspension have me favoring Oregon State. They have better stability at the quarterback position, and a distinct coaching advantage. It’s never smart to lay points with a team in the midst of a losing streak, but I think the Beavers get it done to finish above .500 this season.
