12 Harvard Crimson vs. 4 Michigan State Spartans

Game Line: Michigan State -7.5 Game Total: 137 (from BetOnline)

The Michigan State Spartans take on the Harvard Crimson in the third round of the NCAA tournament from Spokane, Washington. The Spartans advanced to the third round by defeating Delaware 93-78. Forward Adreian Payne made his presence felt with a career-high 41 points and at one point had as many points as the whole Delaware team. The Spartans are finally healthy, and are a legitimate contender to cut down the nets in North Texas. The Spartans are averaging 76.2 ppg while shooting 47.4% from the field with a 1.49 assist to turnover ratio. They are great on the glass with Payne and forward Brendan Dawson, who together average 15 boards per game. The team is averaging 37 boards per game, and average a 5.0 rebound margin as well. Defensively they are allowing 65.7 ppg and limiting opponents to 40% shooting from the field, which is tops in the Big Ten.

The Harvard Crimson advanced to the round of 32 by upsetting Cincinnati 61-57. The Crimson come in with an impressive 27-4 record, and have some tournament experience from last year. The Crimson average 73.6 ppg while shooting 46.7% from the field this season and have a 1.27 assist to turnover ratio. They are also successful from shooting the 3, hitting 38.7% of their attempts from beyond the arc. Defensively they are 13th in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 60.5 ppg while limiting the opposition to 40.7% shooting from the field.

I’m laying the points with Michigan State on Saturday, Harvard is a great story, but I feel they are way overmatched here. The Crimson are a much disciplined squad on both ends, but they won’t be able to match the size and the athleticism of the Spartans. Tom Izzo’s squad will not take this team lightly, even though they are an Ivy League school as I am positive they are very aware of what Harvard is capable of. Harvard’s victory over the Bearcats was a big win, but Cincinnati is anemic at the offensive end. Michigan State has too many scoring options, and they’re inside presence will just be too much for Harvard to handle.
