Game Line: Iowa State -9 (from BetOnline)

Saturday NCAABB analysis: The #22 ranked Kansas State Wildcats travel to Ames, Iowa to take on the #15 ranked Iowa State Cyclones in a Big 12 clash.

Kansas State is coming off a tough 3 point loss on the road at Texas as they were the victim of a last second 3 pointer. After a tough start to the season starting 2-3, the Wildcats reeled off 10 straight wins, including a 74-71 victory over top ten ranked Oklahoma State. The winning streak ended abruptly with a 26 point road loss at Kansas. The Wildcats are averaging 67.8 ppg, and shooting 42% from the field this season. They average 37.2 rebounds per game and are only allowing oppenents to shoot 39.9% from the field. They defend the perimeter very well, as they rank 5th in the nation in 3 point field goal percentage allowing only 26% of those 3 point attempts. Defensively they are ranked 15th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 60 ppg.

Iowa State Cyclones are one of the highest scoring teams in the nation, averaging 85.1 ppg (6th in the nation). The Cyclones had one of the best starts in school history with a 14-0 start. Conference play however hasn’t been too kind to them. They are 2-3 in Big 12 play and have lost 3 straight to the hands of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. They’ve had a week off and should be well rested for Saturday’s contest. The Cyclones like to shoot the three as they are tops in the Big 12 in 3 point attempts per game, yet they are only shooting 28.3% in Big 12 play. They are decent on the glass, as they are averaging 39.9 rebounds per game. Defensively they are allowing their opponents to shoot 40% from the field and are allowing 70 ppg.

I’m taking the points with Kansas State on Saturday. I believe that the Wildcats can defend the perimeter well enough to somewhat limit the Iowa State 3 point attack. Iowa State is actually in a look ahead spot here. The Cyclones I’m sure are eager to right the ship and get in the win column, but they have Kansas on deck next Wednesday. The same Kansas team that defeated them in Ames less than two weeks ago. I’ve heard that there was a players only meeting at Iowa State shortly after their third loss in a row, yet I don’t put much stock into it. Iowa State can probably pull out the win with the home crowd behind them, but I can’t imagine them covering the large number here.
